Welcome to Gillette

FOXBOROUGH -- Welcome to Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots host the Texans today (1 p.m.).

A few quick notes to pass along:

On Friday, the Patriots had linebackers Sam Cowart (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/12300) and Orlando Ruff (http://www.nfl.com/players/playerpage/146536)in for tryouts. The team's depth at linebacker is thin, and Cowart and Ruff are likely on the team's short list in an emergency.

Also, keep an eye on safety Guss Scott today, as he is likely to be activated to the team's' 53-man roster. The team has an open roster spot, and special teams are a concern today. Scott could potentially help there.

Here at the stadium, it is currently 46 degrees, party cloudy, and windy. The conditions are better than one would have expected for this time of year in New England.

Scouts from the Jaguars and Colts are scheduled to be in attendance today. The Patriots visit the Jaguars next weekend, and the Texans host the Colts.

We'll have more throughout the day.

It's probably easiest to get a guy like Scott ready for ST play. It's mostly keeping you lanes and running downfield kamakazzi style.

Not to mention that he was playing special teams before the Pats let him go.

I almost feel sorry for the kid. His agent messes up his contract to the point where he's signing 1 year deals with no signing bonus and the kid gets injured each of his 1st 3 seasons.

Mario's foot has been keeping him from being explosive. He's been getting a lot of double-teams against him and opponents generally don't run to his side of the ball. We blitz a fair amount of time, but even Tennessee kept us from Vince Young for the most part last week. Just get used to hearing the name DeMeco Ryans.

NFL coverage sucks here in central Texas. The one thing that has been consistent is that they broadcast the Titans games regardless of the other great games available.

So I know I'm going to get to see the Pats-Houston game today right?

Nope, I get the Tennessee-Jacksonville game.

Bad break for Jacksonville. Fred Taylor had a big run and looked like he could go all the way, but pulled a hamstring and stepped out of bounds. Then Pacman Jones picks David Garrard and returns if for 6 the other way.

The protection of QBs is such a joke. Early in the game Tennessee got a penalty when pushing Garrard out of bounds .."extending the arms". Later Garrard was running to the sidelines, the defender let up rather than hit him and Garrard lowered his shoulder and hit the defender as he was going out of bounds. No penalty of course, nor should there be.

...but the QB can punish the defender and still be immune himself?

tough one ..but brady prefers that than to try run a play for thomas or klight or gaffney...this texans team has masked all our off woes so far...if they could stop our run it wouldve been a little more interesting for us...

Yup. We've been handling them just fine thanks to some a stupid gaff by their HC and some more picks off an inept QB (although we are starting to sputter now up by 20) even without Maroney or Watson because their defense is overwrought already. But the broader questions about our receiving corps remain... Caldwell, Brown, ?, ??, ???

Well at least we know Jabar can make the wide open easy catch sometimes. Hopefully that's something he can build on. GAME

Unfortunately the Texans aren't the kind of team you face come January when you're up against either stiffer defenses, or explosive offenses or some combination of both.

no disrespect ..iam happy our team isnt playing down to competition for once but i think our passing game can be better...the score doesnt indicate that i know but the play does...lets hope gaffeny and crew improve...mario williams should improve i think but this league is built for offense and unless he has more people like him...teams will put a TE and take him away..texans need a few more like him to see his true abilities IMO

You probably didn't see the last two games the Pats have played (vs. Lions and at Miami). They were very inconsistent. The defense kept them in the Miami game and bailed them out in the Lions game.

Hopefully, for us New England fans, this is a good sign because our next two games are on the road against hungry, scrappy teams looking for a playoff spot.

Here's something for y'all. This is the Texans radio color commentator:

"You know, they have a good core of players, for the last couple years, a good core of players but the support cast has changed a lot the last few years. And you know something? They just continue to win."

Play-by-play: "Houstan down 27 to 0, second most in Texans history, with 1:16 to go in the first half."

Color: "They just continue to win, and you know, even with that turnover I'm sure every Texan fan would be absolutely thrilled to have what they have going. I mean, who who possibly be disappointed with a record like that? Nine and four is a phenomenal record, and they do it every year."

I can't believe that any Pats fan would criticize your team when you're up 20-0. I wish I could be like that just one game in the history of my horrible team. Do you see the QB play we're getting? He was a #1 overall draft pick and is probably the worst QB in the league.

Congrats on your win though, guys, sorry my team couldn't give y'all a better practice. Watch out for the Titans, though.

I feel your pain.

I'm usually down on being negative but we had a real bad game last week and our offense has really looked out of synch. Everybody here is watching the passing game particularly looking for improvement.

You've got to get a good coach and organization and support them. I don't think Carr is bad, I just think there's too much disorgnization. Ittakes time and consistency.

Actually, he's been in quite a bit more than that - it's just that nearly every play he is in on is a running play.

I'd say he's been in roughly 10 plays, 8 were runs, 2 were passes - one was a screen, and one was the time Brady was sacked. They never showed a replay so it was hard to tell what kind of route he ran or if he was open, but I still think Tom has to at some point just trust in CJ's athleticism and throw the ball his way. CJ will make the play.

I'm hoping we see a lot more of him in the 2nd half - with this kind of lead, there's no reason not too.

All the other receivers have shown positive signs, Caldwell continues to be absolutely money on 3rd down - Gaffney had the TD, also had the drop, but the fact that he got open was good to see.

It's so important to make something out of the #1 choice. Mario Williams will be a great defensive cornerstone, but you could have traded down and still gotten him. San Diego trading Eli Manning for Philip Rivers and Shawn Merriman is the type of deal that builds champions.

I wrote on my overview of the team that AJ does have a tendency to drop balls. A couple of his drops have just been bad placement by Carr, but he's made a lot of mistakes this season that's led to turnovers, included being stripped a couple of times and a couple of picks have resulted from him not making the catch. His main problem is that he doesn't use his hands when he catches.

He'll probably be available as a FA the year after next, he's disgusted with this team as is Dunta Robinson. No way those guys will choose to stick around with our joke of a franchise.

Oh, and thank you everyone for trying to up my spirits. I know that it'll have to get better eventually, but I've waited 5 years and have watched teams go from garbage to playoffs, I'm still waiting on some positives from the Texans.

This will cheer you up. It's our senior Football writer at the Globe giving his opinion of our highest pick in this era.

"On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson or the second-best tackle in the draft in Kenyatta Walker, they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sacks last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon. - Ron Borges, MSNBC after 2001 Draft.

I say generally, drafting high for defense Line is a good sign. That's what we do.

I went to the game today(my first). I loved it. The offense wasnt really great, but they did what was necesary and got points off some superb play by the defense. THE man was Faulk. I felt good to see him pull out two big TD's in the first Quarter. I mean quite a bunch of people get all over him when he fumbles or makes a bad play. But he is really usefull for the offense. The offense could use some more spark, we need Maroney back because with 3 good RB's, its surely better than 2. Gaffney dropped a picture perfect bomb from Brady. Caldwell is doing a consistent good job but our other recievers really need to step it up. I am still wondering why Gabriel was cut...

But ST coverage was really good, some nice punts that went within the 10 yard line from Walter, plus Hobbs' awesome return. So all the INT's, the defense did a great job. Nice win but we really need a great offensive performance to beat the Jaguars....

Carr isn't the problem. The Texans O-line is the problem. They couldn't keep a front line of a bunch of 5'9" 100 lb grandmothers from getting to Carr.
