WASHINGTON, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- NATO assumed command of military operations in eastern Afghanistan Thursday, giving it responsibility for day-to-day operations across the country.

Some 12,000 U.S. forces in Afghanistan will now fall under NATO command, under the leadership of British Gen. David Richard, commander of the International Security and Assistance Force.

Another 4,000 and 5,000 U.S. forces will remain dedicated to training the Afghan National Army and police. The remaining 5,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan are special forces conducting counter-terrorist operations against Taliban and al-Qaida forces and leadership, and support and logistics forces.

U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Karl Eikenberry will remain as the national commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, according to the U.S. military. He will also remain in charge of the training Afghan forces, and will oversee U.S. military reconstruction and economic development projects.

Didn't the Rethugs object to this sort of thing during the Bosnia campaign? Maybe Clinton taught them a thing or two.

Default Re: U.S. forces under foreign command

Did you see Frontline Tuesday nite?? not sure if it going to be repeated, but worth a view. Apparently Afghanistan is trying, but Pakistan on its border has a bunch of madrassas recruiting and training Al Queada and Taliban.. they are pouring back into Afghanistan creating mayhem. Something was said, I erased it, that if any of these renegade tribes drop their arms we funnel money to them.. I was not sure of all of the details. We are no nearer to ending this mess there, than we were 4 years ago.
