Default Ohio delays destruction of Presidential ballots to investigate irregularities

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/08/31/wa...rtner=homepage

Quote:
“There is a gap between the numbers provided in the local level records, which until recently no one has been allowed to see, and the official final tallies that were publicly released after this election, and we want to figure out why that gap is there.”

The planned action of Mr. Blackwell, a Republican who is running for governor, and the threatened suit could draw attention to possible irregularities in the election that he supervised.

The suit would follow what researchers call the first time anyone other than county and state officials in Ohio have been given such extensive access to the main material from the previous presidential election.

After eight months inspecting 35,000 ballots from 75 rural and urban precincts, the critics say that they have found many with signs of tampering and that in some precincts the number of voters differs significantly from the certified results.

In Miami County, in southwestern Ohio, official tallies in one precinct recorded about 550 votes. Ballots and signature books indicated that 450 people voted.

The investigation has not inspected all 5.6 million ballots in the election because the critics were not given access to them until January. That followed an agreement by the League of Women Voters, a plaintiff in another election suit against the state, that it was not contesting the 2004 results, Mr. Goodman said.

All well and good Mikey...are they allowing enough time to fix the problems?

i would say...to heck with the investigation...let's assume there was tampering and let's make it better and safer. Watch, the election will come and they will say they did not have enough time.

Me, If I think somethings a problem...I skip the inbetween and assume the problem exists...I take care of it and I move on...research is good when it's expediant in the proper direction...i sense these people are searching to point the finger.

Save the finger pointing and or indictments for after 08'...make it better now starting tomorrow.

Yeah lets implement a system with more of an id check that you need to cash a check, purge the dead from the rolls, and develop a system to keep people from voting in one state and casting an absentee ballot in another state.

I thougth it is important to find out who really won the Ohio election, and as a consequence, the presidency of this country.

I think they should follow through and hand count all the ballots.

I agree Mikey...I just don't want a replay of 04' again.

I think hand counting should be secondary to getting some security...there's only 1 year left. If that state blows the next election there are no excuses.

Too late to kick George out...I'm all for moving on starting now.

2 years later and now they are doing this, what about the chain of custody in these votes and how have they been safeguarded. There can be a lot of games in this period, while it looks like there may have been irregularities, there are always regularities on both sides of the fence, the difference is it seems that Ohio got caught.

You are right, and while it may be worthwhile emotionally to see any corrections made, we need to make the real corrections as far as the conflicts of interest regarding the actual machines and control of the election commissions. This has always been an easy avenue of corruption throughout the history of the US.
