Welcome to Gillette
FOXBOROUGH -- Welcome to Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots host the Redskins at 8 p.m. ET.
A few things to watch for:
Playing time for starters
With Bill Belichick saying the Patriots were preparing for this week as if it was the regular season, look for the starters to possibly play into the third quarter. Having the starters go into the locker room at halftime, then return to the field at the start of the third quarter after adjustments are made, is something Belichick has done in the past in the preseason.
Harrison's potential return
Earlier in the week, safety Rodney Harrison said his goal was to string 3-4 practices together. He did, putting himself in position to potentially suit up tonight for the first time since tearing three ligaments in his knee on Sept. 25, 2005. Also keep an eye out for center Dan Koppen, who also practiced throughout the week and hasn't played since Nov. 13, 2005.
Gostkowski from long range
Rookie Stephen Gostkowski is 4-of-4 on field goal attempts this preseason, hitting from 37, 37, 34 and 33 yards. He's due to be tested from longer range.
Seau's role
Linebacker Junior Seau practiced throughout the week and could start at middle linebacker next to Mike Vrabel. Look for the Patriots to use him on early downs, subbing for him on obvious passing situations.
Quarterback Tom Brady is on the cover of the GameDay program being sold tonight. The referee for the game is Jeff Triplette.
More to come throughout the night.

TE summit
Former Patriots tight end Christian Fauria is on the field, catching up with a few of his old teammates -- Daniel Graham, Benjamin Watson, Mike Vrabel and Kevin Faulk. Fred Baxter, who is coaching with the Patriots as part of the league's minority coaching program, is also in the group.
For more on Fauria, here is a Boston Globe story (http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2006/08/26/for_fauria_it_was_difficult_to_let_go/)that offers some of his thoughts on how hard it was to leave New England.

Here’s the list of players not expected to play for Washington tonight:
CB Shawn Springs, RB Clinton Portis, LB Kevin Simon, LB Robert McCune, OL Jim Molinaro, TE Robert Johnson, DE Phillip Daniels, DT Cornelius Griffin.
Left off the list is newly-acquired tailback T.J. Duckett, who joined the team just three days ago and practiced for the first time in a Redskin uniform on Thursday.

Scouts’ honor
Posted by Albert Breer at 6:22 pm
With the first cutdown just three days away and the final one coming in just over a week, the pressbox in loaded with scouts. The Bills, Panthers, Lions, Cowboys, Packers, Chiefs, Colts, Dolphins, Vikings, Saints, Jets, Raiders and Eagles are repped here. In all there are 14 credentialed officials from 13 teams (Carolina brought two.) Also up is former Redskins and Texans exec Charley Casserly, now a network analyst for CBS.

Points of emphasis
Posted by Albert Breer at 6:13 pm
Three things that are on the front-burner tonight:
1. Personnel combinations at linebacker:The starters through camp have fluctuated, so expect a lot more experimenting, especially with Junior Seau in the mix. Mike Vrabel, of course, is the key swing player here. If Tully Banta-Cain performs, he’s inside with, presumably, Seau. The big thing with Banta-Cain is how well he sets the edge and holds up physically against the Redskins line. If somehow the fourth-year pro regresses, look for Vrabel back outside and, perhaps, Barry Gardner inside as a stopgap until Tedy Bruschi returns.
2. Wide receiver: No kidding? This is pretty cut and dried. The Patriots, with the Deion Branch situation what it is, are hurting out wide. And Washington’s a team that can really get after the quarterback. So getting open quickly is key against Redskin coordinator Gregg Williams’ pressure packages. Let’s see if Bam Childress, Reche Caldwell, Troy Brown, et al can make it happen.
3. Injured players: With the exception of Patrick Pass, Marquise Hill and Chad Brown, the whole Patriots’ training-room crew seemed to make big progress this week. And this being the “big” one of preseason games, it’ll be interesting to see if and how much guys like Dan Koppen, Nick Kaczur, Rodney Harrison and Jarvis Green play. It also could say a lot about those guys’ readiness to start the season in 15 days.

Early on
Posted by Albert Breer at 5:56 pm
The gates have yet to open here at Gillette Stadium, where it’s overcast and a brisk 68 degrees out.
WR Rich Musinski, LB Mike Vrabel, RB Kevin Faulk and TEs Daniel Graham and Ben Watson were among the first Patriots on the field. A few minutes ago, Graham and Watson walked over to greet homecoming TE Christian Fauria, now of the Redskins. Vrabel and Faulk are over there now too.

Harrison's return
Safety Rodney Harrison has taken the field in his uniform for warmups. Harrison hasn't played since tearing three ligaments in his knee on Sept. 25, 2005.
Last week, linebacker Junior Seau dressed but didn't play, but we've been told that Harrison should see action tonight.
REDSKINS NOT EXPECTED TO PLAY: Cornerback Shawn Springs, running back Clinton Portis, linebacker Kevin Simon, linebacker Robert McCune, offensive lineman Jim Molinaro, tight end Robert Johnson, defensive lineman Phillip Daniels and defensive tackle Corneliu Griffin are not expected to play for the Redskins tonight. The Patriots haven't released information on players who aren't expected to play.
SCOUTS IN THE HOUSE: Once again, several teams have been issued credentials for scouts to watch tonight's game. The Bills, Panthers, Lions, Cowboys, Packers, Chiefs, Colts, Dolphins, Vikings, Saints, Jets, Raiders and Eagles are the teams with scouts in attendance. Many of those scouts made the trek to New England after taking in Friday night's Jets-Giants game.

Patriots S Rodney Harrison is indeed in uniform and going through agility drills with the rest of the secondary. Pre-game thoughts
A few observations from pre-game warmups:
* Rodney Harrison at safety. He was lined up with the first unit, alongside Eugene Wilson. Ellis Hobbs and Asante Samuel were the corners.
* Dan Koppen at center. He was lined up with the first unit, so it looks like he'll start.
* Junior Seau in the middle. He was lined up at inside linebacker, next to Mike Vrabel. The outside linebackers were Tully Banta-Cain and Rosevelt Colvin.
* Ryan O'Callaghan at right tackle. The rookie was lined up with the first-team line, and looks like he'll make his second straight start.
* Johnathan Sullivan at nose. With Vince Wilfork not dressed for warmups, Sullivan should get a lot of reps tonight.

Sullivan is starting at nose tonight by the way. Now he needs the reps. That should be interesting to watch.

I'll have to disagree there about the teams the Pats faced sucking.
The announcers got it wrong. The Skins were 10-6 and DID make the playoffs. In fact they got about as deep as the Pats did last season.
Also the Cards are fielding what can easily be a top 10 offense this year with their receivers + Edge.
It's just you couldn't tell because the Pats shut em down so bad.
I don't think this game will go easily for the Skins either starting out of the hole 10-0 already.

The Redskins are OK. Not great. Just OK. To me, they're in that constellation of teams that could win 7-10 games, depending on luck and schedule. Put it this way: if this were a regular season game, I'd be very bummed if the Patriots lost at home and disappointed if they lost on the road.

OK,
Lets put the offensive starters to bed.
Listening to the radio broadcast they could do this all night.
I am amazed that Brady is doing this with a tight end and a 35 year old slot receiver (damn good slot receiver, but you get the point).

Wide open TD pass to Watson in the endzone.
Brady poses quite a quandry for the Skins. If they don't blitz they can't get any pressure on him and he picks em apart. If they do blitz he finds the open man quick for a big play. :)
Gotta love it! Brady is so quick with his reads and getting rid of the ball it's almost counterproductive to blitz him.
And we're up 17-0. It's getting ugly. Think we'll see Cassell soon?

Gotti just got his first tackle and there was a holding on the return too. Now Colvin sacks Mark at the 8. 2nd and 21 they get a 3 yard gain up the middle. This is dominant on both sides of the ball, now Colvin for a tip. 4th and 17 inside their own 10.

Brady's numbers for the half are gaudy -- for what it's worth. Still pre-season, how do you get pressure using the vanilla D, etc. For what its worth though -- big holes for the run game, lots of time for the pass game.
The only "negative" might be that it's hard to see what would happen if they could keep Watson covered, because then we get to see whether caldwell and brown could actually keep these drives alive. I guess they're basically giving Brady time for someone to break open, and it's usually Watson thus far.
does anybody notice brady getting more frustrated than usual. part of it is his usual emotion ..but i think he is being a little too hard on his recievers and TE's..

Faulk up the gut for 9 just short of the 1st but offside taken for replay 3rd and 4. Inc. to Faulk so Gotti is in and it is good. 20-0 with 2:20 left.

He wasn't yelling in fustration...he was in a no huddle and trying to get them to move. On two occassions he did get a bit PO's - 1 time with Brown and 1 time with Caldwell - they both missed easy routes and yeah, that would fustrate you as the QB!

I guess I get all pumped about "the running game" and include screen passes, when okay, those are passes not runs.
Liked about the runningBACKS:
- Dillon's long screen catch n run,
- Maroney's easy 5 yard TD scamper n dive
- Faulk's 9 yard run through huge hole
- probably other bright spots that don't come to mind

He's sure stinking tonight. Brunell's scrambling ability has deteriorated over the past few seasons and he has yet to adapt to it. He's actually a reasonably good QB, IMO. It's just that the Skins offense isn't clicking (having difficulty learning Saunder's new offense) and the Patriots defense is teeing off on him.

Shmessy's Halftime Review from the WUSA TV 9 (DC) TV Feed:
__________________________________________________ ___
1) Mike Patrick and John Riggins repeatedly imploring the viewers not to give up on their team.
2) Same announcing crew muttering that "We're a top 3 D last year and this game is two NE dropped passes from being 31-0 at the half"
3) Suicide watch is officially "on" for Daniel Snyder and Jason Chayut.
4) I love Mike Wright.
5) Don't let Deion Branch within 100 miles of Ben Watson because Benjamin is waaaaaayyyyyy outperforming his 6 year rookie contract.
6) Is Dillon hurt - that helmet ploough in the first quarter looked nasty and he hasn't been back since? (Sorry if this has been reported in NE, but the DC production is all Skins all the time).
7) BB is definitely hiding Mr. Maroney from the opposing staff filmmakers.
8) Quick - - What does Reche Caldwell and Roberto Duran have in common?
9) Ladies and Gentlemen: That is last year's Top-3 NFL Defense against whom the Branch/Givens-less Patriots just dropped 20 (could easily have been 31) 1st half points on.
10) How did everyone like Mankins' athleticism on that long screen pass to Dillon in the first half?
11) Hey NSPF ("We have no kicker") - - The Ghost is 6 for 6 this preseason.
12) Riggins is apoplectic that Mr. Glass of Milk Joe Gibbs definitely mouthed the word "Crap" on camera.

Not good, Sarge. Not good. In definite pain when trying to put weight on the leg. Med Assistants standing on each side holding him upright.

Tebucky dropped like a rock ala Patrick Pass minus the ball. Hammy, hopefully it looks and feels worse than it is. He's still on the bench.
Anybody think Reche has dropped well down the depth chart? Not to mention off Tommy's favorites list?

Seemed to key in on the back of the thigh.Sounds like it it is either a cramp or a hammy. If there was any pain in the knee they would do the drawer test to check for instability (meaning torn ACL or PCL).

LOL, they are just so....nuts here. I mean, We all know it's preseason and all, blah, blah, blah, but they've shown nothing. Nothing. I think I read over on their board that Brunell has not lead the first team to a score the whole preseason! If that's true, that's just pathetic!

Cobbs wtih a brilliant little TD run and suicide watch starts in Skins land as the Pats pile on the points. 34-0.
Calm down Skins fans it is only preseason.
However I think Cobbs is definitely making the team. :) He looks like a keeper.

Where there's smoke there's fire. And Cobbs is smokin'. After the Atl game I still reserved my judgement on the kid while many here were praising him.
There's now enough evidence for me. As they say "If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, etc. ....it's a duck".
This kid is a certified player.

Oh you poor bastids being subjected to the DC feed. If Deion is local they just told him his holdout strategy is a bust because "teams move on...". This has been a primer on how great QB's make good WR's look better while bad QB's just suck the life out of a team (and probably cost decent WR's a job). :D

But what does it look like? Are they really having great games, or are they just smacking down on some scrubs?

I jumped onto the Patrick Cobbs bandwagon watching the game last week. Sure, he fumbled, but he absolutely *pancaked* LBs on blitzes twice and picked up LBs two other times. I think he missed one or two, also, but he'll learn there. It's the technique and willingness to stick his nose up there that I liked.

I'm sure the coaches felt Cobbs deserved to run that ball in after his monster effort. I wonder if the players get upset when the score is run during a preseason game?

These players are trying to gain employment. It's not the regular season.
"Running up the score" in PS would entail having all the starters in there in the 4th Q trying to get the 41st point. A' la Steve Spurrier - THEIR coach a few years ago against SF in the PS.

Gibbs for one won't care about the score. It's preseason and each team should be trying to see who can play and in what situations. If that means how Cobbs and the backup Oline does on goaline situations then so be it.

Man, who pissed off the Pats. First a 30-3 shallacking of the Cardinals, and then a 41-0 drubbing of a supposedly desperate to win team, and a team that is supposed to be better than the Cardinals. And everybody knows that the 3rd game of the preseason is the most important. They shoulda just stayed home and gave up the forfeit, it woulda been 8-0. Looks like Watson had a HUGE game, a HUGE coming out party, he IS our #1 receiver. Cobbs looks like he made the team, I'd be shocked if he didn't. He was great in college, so maybe he'll be a very good pro. Cassel only throws 1 incompletion ? I guess he didn't have his usual early game nervousness. All around, you have to be pretty pleased with this preseason so far. I actually hope they lose next week so they remain humble and hungry.
