I think there are something like 4 or 7 THOUSAND admirals/generals/majors or whatever in our military (ret. and active). That 5, 10, or 100 disagree with our president and/or military planning is nothing to write about. Of course, it doesn't mean that the criticsim isn't wrong, or unwarranted, it simply means it's not shocking that there might be a 1% disagreement rate.

Certainly, those in the military, even if they're allowed, would never outright criticize the policy they're implementing. That could lead to all sorts of problems.

That said, I read that there's little precedent for retired senior military people criticizing military policy. If that's true, then it is interesting that several are so outspoken in their criticism, and it's likely they speak for others. Perhaps it just represents a change that these people are speaking out, or perhaps they feel that this is an extraordinary situation.

Sure, there's little precedent. John Fonda Kerry & Ramsey Clarke made careers of criticizing everything military. PLease. Lets not forget that this is the first war with massive 24 hour cable news networks, internet sites, and internet blogs in play. I've maintained that had there been a CNN or Fox during WW II, the polls would show the public wanted a pull out. The fact of the matter is that wars are now being put on TV, whereas in the past, all information was censored. Do a little research on WW II reporting and see how differently it was handled. Had news outlets not been censored back then, the public opinion polls would have been similar to today. Evidence of it is proved by the battle of Iwo Jima. Thousands of US casualties for a lousy 3 mile peice of dirt, with ZERO strategic value. The cost? Thousands of US Marines. The problem? Photos and footage of dead US soldiers on the beaches prompted a dramatic 2 month downturn in recruiting. Why? Cuz people saw dead americans and didn't like it, regardless of the cause.

Leadership cannot make decisions based on polls. The sheeple are far to dumb to understand the magnitude, and complicity of most issues.

I guess you do not have much confidence in those who elect these clowns in office, there are over 2/3 of the country who think we should get out of Iraq.. don't their opinions count for anything??

Nice compliment for the people of America, where did you get that from Rush, Savage or Hannity?? Unf...ingbelievable how you neocons devalue the will of the American people, we will see what happens in November...

The will of the sheeple, not the will of the people.

Here are some poll numbers for you. Tell me how confident some of these people make you feel.

Poll: Americans Dumb as We Thought

Posted by Buck | Aug. 16, 2006, 10:23 am

Ignorance is this: A new Zogby International/AOL.com poll (PDF) has plumbed the depth of Americans’ idiocy, measuring how well citizens of the world’s wealthiest nation know civics versus, say, the names of the Three Stooges. Here are the lowlights:

Knew Homer Simpson’s son’s name is Bart: 60 percent

Could not name one of Homer’s ancient Greek tales (Iliad or Odyssey): 78 percent

Knew Superman is from Krypton: 60 percent

Could name the three branches of U.S. government (executive, judicial, legislative): 42 percent

Knew that CIA stands for Central Intelligence Agency: 60 percent

Knew that CSI stands for Crime Scene Investigation: 53 percent

Could name prime minister of Britain (Tony Blair): 50 percent

Could name two of Snow White’s dwarves: 52 percent remembered Sleepy, 39 percent named Dopey, but only 1.5 percent named Bashful

Could name two Supreme Court justices: 20 percent named Clarence Thomas, 11 percent named Antonin Scalia, but only 1 percent named Stephen Breyer; 63 percent could not name a single justice

Could not name Samuel Alito as the justice most recently appointed to the Supreme Court: 81 percent

When asked which current world leader signed a secret order authorizing the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on American citizens and foreign nationals in the United States, 67 percent named George Bush.

Named all three of the Three Stooges: 74 percent (only 1 percent mentioned poor Shemp)

The poll was taken in late July among 1,213 Americans, of whom 29 percent were college graduates, 74 percent were white, 27 percent make less than $25,000 per year and 52 percent were female.

How about this one.

May 3, 2006

Where is...My Mind?

Tsk tsk. It seems that young Americans are more Americentric (self-absorbed) than we thought. A report in National Geographic shows that 63% of Americans aged 18-24 could could not correctly locate Iraq on a map of the Middle East. Other stunning facts revealed in the report:

· 70% couldn’t find Israel on a Middle Eastern map.
· 90% couldn’t spot Afghanistan on a map of Asia.
· 75% couldn’t place Indonesia.
· 74% believed English is the most commonly spoken native language in the world.

To see if you fare better, click here (the average responder got 54% right). But you're probably saying, "but Middle Eastern and Asian geography is hard" and "I bet students in loser countries did worse". But the fact of the matter is the U.S. did worse than every other country in the survey except for Mexico, and even there it only did slightly better. And (and this is the real kick in the Rand McNally's), half of those Americans surveyed couldn't even identify New York State on a U.S. map and only 2/3rd could point to the general vicinity of the northwest on a map. And you thought we just sucked at science and math.
