A woman diagnosed with a condition that causes her to experience up to 40 orgasms a day has been found guilty of housing benefit fraud. Suspicions were aroused when media coverage revealed that the man she claimed was her lodger was in fact her lover.

After Ruth Byron featured in women's magazines and television chat shows discussing her condition which causes her endless multiple orgasms, the Department of Work and Pensions took a keen interest.

In addition to detailing her persistent sexual arousal syndrome, the 50-year-old also mentioned having a 22-year-old lodger.

After benefit fraud investigators monitored the coverage of "Britain's Most Orgasmic Woman" they realised Simon Leach, who Byron claimed was her lodger, was in fact her lover - who she has since married. They also found that she had been overpaid £6,097 in housing and income benefits after lying to the department.

At first Ms Byron, from Blackpool, told them Mr Leach was her lodger and not a lover but that did not tally with the media interviews she had given.

Yesterday she was sentenced to a two-year community rehabilitation order and ordered to pay £50 costs after admitting four counts of benefit fraud.

Prosecutor Warren Spencer said: "She claimed benefit from December 2001 as a single parent. At the time of her original claim she lived with her ex husband and dependent children. Inquiries revealed that Simon Leach lived at her home as a lodger from July 2003.

"It is the prosecution's case that from August 10 2004 Byron and Mr Leach maintained a common household."

Revealing their relationshiop, Mr Leach, 22, said: "I can't deny it, at first I felt like a stud. But as the weeks go by I sometimes wished it would end. We tried a sex ban so we could get some rest but that only lasted a night."

Ms Byron, a mother of ten, was at one stage so overwhelmed by her condition she was rushed to hospital where doctors offically diagnosed her syndrome.

She now has medical help for the condition, is prescribed muscle relaxant drugs and is seeing a psycho sexual counsellor.

Mr Leach, who is a year younger that Byron's eldest daughter Jodie, added: "The gift of unending orgasms is also a curse. Ruth gets exhausted and seriously lacks sleep. She cannot wear tight clothes like jeans because that sends her off too."

In the interview which caught the eye of investigators, Ruth said: "I can have ten or more orgasms at night and then have another one on the traffic island I cross as I walk the children to school. The trigger is sex with Simon and that can set up 40 or more orgasms a day. They are growing more and more intense. That is why I sought medical help.

"Some might say this is the best thing ever, but it is not - it rules your life."

A spokesman for the DWP said: "The case reveals that the information she told the DWP when we investigated her right to claim did not fit with the stories we saw about her lifestyle. It shows how thorough we are."
