Reiss:

If pre-game warmups are an indication, the Patriots will open with the following defense:

LE: Ty Warren
NT: Vince Wilfork
RE: Mike Wright
OLBs: Mike Vrabel, Rosevelt Colvin
ILBs: Barry Gardner, Don Davis
CBs: Ellis Hobbs, Asante Samuel
S: Artrell Hawkins, James Sanders

'as a rookie he looked good'...yeah, he really lit the league up. Please...I have been saying since Flutie retired - WE NEED A BACKUP QB, CASSEL IS NOT THE REAL DEAL!!!!

He made some nice plays against Miami in a meaningless game that was played for nothing. No, but that's a pick he should hold on to. Still, I'm starting to feel okay about the depth in the secondary, Gus Scott, Chad Scott, Hawkins and Sanders backing up Rodney and Geno and Hobbs and Asante is an okay mix to me. They haven't looked lost out there. If Tedy gets healthy, and the inside spot next to him can be held down well, the defense should be alright.

That said, you can see why Seymour got paid. Totally different when he's not there, admirable job by Mike Wright or not.

Andrews: Positives: Has marginal size, but shows well-developed muscle tone, tight waist, good bubble and excellent plant-and-drive agility...Has the change of direction skills to break on the ball quickly and the flexibility and timing to adjust to the ball in flight...Has very good strength for a player his size, using his hands effectively to shed blocks...Willing tackler inside the box, playing with reckless abandon...Will not hesitate to sacrifice himself in order to make the play...Even with that style of play, he is a durable athlete who never missed playing time due to an injury...Has good instincts and vision to locate the ball, showing urgency to close on the play...Better in zone coverage than playing the man, as he has the flexibility to get good depth in his pass drops and the explosiveness to close while taking good angles on plays in front of him...Has excellent range and recovery speed...Quick to read the run and sniff out the ball, showing good power filling the lanes...Reliable wrap-up tackler who can also hit with good force.

so whats this new down by contact rule change they are talking about?

http://www.patriots.com/search/index.cfm?ac=searchdetail&pid=20298&pcid=44&special_section=trainingcamp2006

A few rules involving instant replay have been modified for the 2006 season. One big change that’s raising eyebrows and causing concern is that instant replay can now be used to review ‘down by contact’ calls.

A challenge can now take place when a runner is ruled ‘down by contact,’ but he actually fumbled the ball, and the recovery takes place during the continuing action of the play. If the ruling is changed after the review, the recovering team gets the ball at the spot where it was recovered, with any additional progress nullified. If the referee doesn’t have indisputable visible evidence of who recovered the ball, the initial ruling will stand.

Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick expressed some concern about how this new rule will play out in games, although in the end he deferred to the “experts.”

“I think in this particular rule, we're kind of going into an area that we haven't gone into,” said Belichick. “The old adage of 'play to the whistle' might not be good enough any more. I think that leads into some other questions, particularly with player safety, or some guys are playing beyond the whistle and other guys may not be. Some guys may see the ball if it's loose, other guys may hear the whistle and not see the ball. I'm not sure that everybody is reacting to the same thing. Again, this isn’t a rule we made. But we have to try to understand it and play it as it is going to be interpreted and officiated.

“I didn’t do all the research on the rules so I’m not an expert on it, but there are a lot of concerns that were brought up on the rule that is proposed and I think there are a lot of issues that need to be resolved.”
