THE families of four British soldiers killed in the Gulf claimed a "stunning victory" yesterday in their fight to prove the Iraq war was illegal.
Tony Blair has repeatedly rejected the families' demands for a public inquiry into why Britain went to war.
But the Court of Appeal in London yesterday gave them the go-ahead to ask a judge to hear their case.
The grieving relatives, including Glasgow mum Rose Gentle, will now apply for a judicial review. And if their application is granted, the courts could overturn Blair's decision not to order a public inquiry.
Rose has been campaigning against the war since her son Gordon, 19, was killed by a roadside bomb in 2004 while serving with the Royal Highland Fusiliers in Basra.

The courts could still refuse to grant a judicial review.
But the solicitor for the families, Phil Shiner, said yesterday's ruling would force the Government to offer evidence on how the decision to go to war was taken.
He added: "That evidence needs to establish once and for all whether the decision to invade was lawful."
Mr Shiner claimed that the Government's senior legal adviser, Attorney General Lord Goldsmith, altered his opinion on whether the war was legal after being "sat on" by Blair and other ministers.
And he said ministers would now have to explain why Goldsmith's advice changed.
A spokesman for the attorney general said that the Government would continue to oppose the families' demands.
He pointed out that there had already been four inquiries into the war. And he insisted: "Issues relating to the use of armed force are matters for the elected Government to decide, not the courts."
Experts doubt that the courts will order a public inquiry. Even the judges who found for the families yesterday warned that they still face "formidable hurdles".
