Default Your favorite film comedies

I've come to realize how hard it is to find a good film comedy these days, with all the juvenile shlock Hollywood is churning out ("Little Man," "You, Me & Dupree," etc.). So, what are your top 10 comedies? The only qualification is that it had to make you laugh out loud. (I reserve the right to amend my list as memory serves.)

(1). South Park: Bigger, Longer, & Uncut

(2). Kung-Fu Hustle (just saw this the other evening, an instant classic)

(3). Young Frankenstein

(4). The Blues Brothers

(5). Airplane

(6). Team America, World Police

(7). It Happened One Night

(8). Naked Gun

(9). Monty Python and the Holy Grail

(10). Planes, Trains, & Automobiles

Honorable mentions: This Is Spinal Tap, Duck Soup, Army of Darkness, Men in Black, Top Secret, Groundhog Day, Animal House, Me Myself and Irene, Caddyshack, The Longest Yard (original version), Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

Wow! We have overlap!

1. A Fish Called Wanda

2. Kind Hearts and Coronets ("I always say that my West Window has all the exuberance of Chaucer with none of the concomitant crudity")

3. A Night at the Opera ("There ain't no Sanity Clause!")

and

4. Annie Hall (Yes -- Jew!)

are 'musts' for my list and Gregory's Girl and Bringing up Baby would be very close.

If it's laugh-out-loud funny we're after, I'll have to add

5. Animal House

6. Blazing Saddles

and

7. The Producers ("Today you dine with Max Bialystok!").

Also, I can't leave out

8. Some Like It Hot.

Yikes! Only two more.

Well, I can't leave out

9. Morgan, a Suitable Case for Treatment

Not well known at all (but I'm pretty sure you would like it, Clonamery). Set in early sixties London, rich socialite (Vanessa Redgrave in her first film role!) divorces her left-wing artist husband (David Warner) who goes mad while fantasising about the class struggle. (His Mum is even more Marxist than he is. They sit in front of Marx's grave and she talks about Morgan's late father: "'E wanted to abolish marriage, shoot the Royal Family and put everyone who'd been to public school to work on a chain gang. 'E was an idealist, your Dad!")

So it's number 10. Gregory's Girl is a great movie. There's also a case for another Ealing Comedy (The Lavender Hill Mob?). Then there's the screwball comedies. Bringing up Baby is great but I like Philadelphia Story even more, I think, and

10. His Girl Friday

best of all.

Cheers!

(Had never heard of "The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming!" Just looked it up on Google -- will now look out for it.)
