But jeez, what a horrible decision. I'd imagine that NBC is going to lose a healthy chunk of their viewership just from that choice alone.
Olbermann is not calling the game, he's on the pre-game and half-time show in studio along with Dan Patrick, Rodney Harrison and Tony Dungy. In other words you only have to put up with him when there's no football being played. Al Michaels calls the play-by-play with Cris Collinsworth as the analyst.

I think from the comments in this thread it is obvious that the biggest problem with Olbermann is not his knowledge, or lack of knowledge about football; it's his politics. For networks it can be a fine line between being a lightning rod that will attract interest (e.g., Howard Cosell) and one that will turn viewrs away (e.g., Dennis Miller, Rush Limbaugh) from telecasts. It might not be a bad idea to dump Olbermann and let Patrick take the lead, getting opinions and insight from Harrison and Dungy.

Disregarding the "I like/hate this guy's politics", the group seemed kind of stiff. Not much chemistry at all between the four of them. That could be due to any one of a number of things: the host (is it Olbermann or Patrick?), two new guys to the television world (Dungy and Harrison), lack of direction from the group leader, lack of direction from the producer, lack of preparation or practice, etc. Individually they seem okay (Rodney in particular) but not as a group, in my opinion.

Olberman's great. He's terrific, bright and meticulous at his job.

Is Olberman talking politics on the football show? Are we grown-ups? Are we unaware that he and Dan Patrick are the cream of the croopp when it comes to sports commentary partners? I understand some of the birthers and death panel crowd would prefer Glenn Beck call these highlights, but you act as though the guy is somehow BAD at this and/or unqualified. He's one of the best EVER at this exact job. Let's keep our eye on the ball a bit.

Any show without Emmit Smith or Jerome Bettis struggling to form sentences is improved and at least watchable.. as far as pregame shows go. I can see what they were trying to do.. You have Patrick (veteran sports show guy), Olberman (sort of wild-card political guy), Dungy (golly gosh by the book nice guy), and Harrison (the wild-card speak his mind football guy). It's a good mix in theory...

At least we don't have to put up with anyone saying "you can't change the stripes of a leopard" anymore.

No, it's that he's a self absorbed, pompous creep who isn't nearly as smart nor as funny as he thinks he is.
