Default It should be possible to challenge without any timeouts...

i cant believe it...for those who saw the closing minutes of the eagles/falcons game...

what a cheap way to win...

the rule better be fixed, or if it ever happens in a SB, there will be riots...as should in my opinion

if u didnt see it, wait for NFL.com to update their video summary

what a bad ending

If it was inside the last two minutes, any challenge has to come from the box. However, if the opposing team runs a play, then the situation is moot.

I don't know what happened either, but the rules are fine the way they are. Inside two minutes the booth reviews it. If you use up all your TOs before that, then too bad for you... it's called game management. But I think Herm would agree with you.

i agree with this...but this takes it into account that the refs dont make AMAZINGLY STUPID calls....which as we all know very well, they easily can...

and this one is up there

Falcons punt returner let the punt go past him without touching it, but the officials called it a muffed punt and Eagles ball. Clearly would have been overturned if Atlanta had been able to challenge.

If you change the rules to allow a challenge without a timeout, you are going to see challenges to stop the clock more often than legit challenges. There eneds to be some penalty for a bad challenge. This could also have happened if the Falcons had used both challenges, and noone would have had any sympathy.

I disagree. It's simple game management to keep at least one timeout in your back pocket for the entire half. You usually save them for time constraints at the end of a half and that's why everything under two minutes is a booth issued review. Mike Smith should've had his team more organized so they weren't burning timeouts so early in the half.

That said; officiating has been awful in the NFL this year. Ed Hochuli went from never making mistakes to worst ref ever.

NAW 2 a gam as long as you have the timeouts...plus an extra if you win the first 2 I think.

I agree with ALP in respect to being limited to a specific number of challenges, regardless of the outcome of the challenge. As long as a coach has a timeout available to lose in case he is wrong, he should be able to challenge as often as he wants to. If the refs blow five calls, a coach should be able to challenge all five of them. By limiting the number of challenges of calls that were indeed incorrect, you are penalizing a team for having a play being called incorrectly against them.

The only limitation should be that you lose a timeout if the call is not overturned - and not the number of correct challenges you are allowed to have.
