Default UFC 98 update

It won't Rampage Jackson vs. Rashad Evans after all at UFC 98 on May 23...

'Rampage' injured; Machida gets shot at Evans - MMA - Yahoo! Sports

It's going to be Machida! I'm stoked Machida is fantastic. Wildo, I'm sure you're pumped as well. Anyone prefer to see Rampage? He'll get his shot after his jaw is all sorted out though I'm sure.

I'm actually going to this and bought tickets back when it was Mir/Lesnar. I couldn't be happier with this development since this I was really looking forward to Machida eventually getting a shot at Rashad.

I also had the potential to be walking away really disappointed with Hughes and Lesnar probably winning (I hate them).

Machida/Evans live! Awesome. I hope Machida wins, i love watching him fight.

I like Lesnar, but I couldn't care about the outcome of the Serra/Hughes fight. Hughes is definitely grating, but Serra bugs me too. Still it's all worth it for Machida/Evans. I'm jealous.

Yeah I can't wait, I love Machida and I like Mir but I don't think he can beat Lesnar who I think is bad for MMA.

I don't like Serra either but I dislike Hughes more than any other fighter so anyone he faces I become a fan of.

The card is pretty stacked with Koscheck, Sherk and Okami fighting also.

Have you seen this by the way? All I can say is WTF:

Lyoto Machida drinks his own urine every morning at UFC blog for UFC news, results, videos, rumors, fights, pics and tickets — MMAmania.com

HAHAH the link title already has me wanting to read it. I'll check it out at lunch.

I hear you about Hughes. I still respect a lot of what he's done, but man what a tool he is. The series of TUF really showed what a douche he is.

I'm curious, why do you think Lesnar is bad for MMA? Do you think it will start a trend of people from other sports coming in? Another pro-wrestler named Bobby Lashley debuted recently and beat Clay Guida. I actually like Lesnar, I think he's insanely fast and athletic for his freaky size.

I don't personally dislike Lesnar that much, I just feel that the mainstream forgets he was a collegiate superstar wrestler and now has the impression that MMA and WWE are similar and that the athletes can all crossover. I've never liked the UFC's image when it comes to marketing and presentation in that it tends to highlight all of the pageantry that is similar to WWE (fake pre-fight trash talk, blood splatter graphics, death metal music etc.). The majority of MMA fans were bad enough before with their booing and stupidity but with Lesnar there's going to be a large influx of WWE fans that don't understand the sport. I know that when I go to 98 it's going to be full of Lesnar fans that bought the tickets before the title fight changed that are going to boo everyone, especially Machida when he "runs" away.

You know what, that's a DAMN good point. You and I both know because we train, but it takes A LOT of hard work and heart to get in there. I completely agree with you about the marketing. There's nothing that makes me cringe more than when two fighters trash talk stupidly (BJ Penn, looking at you). I can understand some jabber back and forth, but the "I'm gonna punch his head off" and "I'm gonna kill him and eat his insides" stuff is degrading frankly. And I hate the whole "the match was so good cause it was bloody" garbage as well.

And the booing..... ugh. Even when a guy from my gym fought in MA, the fat drunks in the audience were booing if guys weren't doing what they wanted. My trainer's wife yelled at one guy, telling him to get some fight shorts on and get in there if he thought he could do better. I was so happy. People do not realize what it takes. I can think of ONE instance in the fights I've seen that deserved boos, and that was the Kaleb Stearns fight last year. That was bad.

So I like your point. It's too bad that Lesnar can't come without bringing all these idiot mouthbreathers, cause like you said, he was a legitmate NCAA champion. I heard an interview with Kurt Angle the other day, and he confirmed he would be fighting at some point as well. And he was a gold medal winner in the Olympics. But you and I both know what that means - more idiot fans.

Exactly. The booing and the "it's ok to hype a fight" by trash talking mentality is already bad in MMA, all these WWE fans are just gonna make it 10x worse. I respect athletes like Lesnar and even Angle, but I can't help but dislike what they represent. At this point the best thing that could happen would be for Mir to take out Lesnar and for Fedor to come over and take out Mir, moving him down the food chain a little bit, which I doubt will happen unfortunately. I'm just really scared that Lesnar is going to become (or already is) the "face" of MMA to a lot of casual fans. And you're definitely right about the booing, there's nothing I can't stand more than "fans" that just want to see two "warriors" stand up and swing at each other, then boo whenever BJJ is involved.

Agreed. It's just a shame that more people didn't understand the work involved.

Well, have fun seeing Evans/Machida. I'm angling to go a live UFC or WEC event someday. There's a bunch of smaller ones around here now though, both in NH and MA. I'm glad for that. My local rock climbing gym even doubles as a training gym for the owners after hours. We've been meaning to go work out with them and see how we stack up against some different opponents. I'm psyched that more people are getting into it.

Thanks. If you can ever get to one I highly suggest it. Even if you're in Vegas during an event and don't want to pay out the ass for tickets I think the weigh ins, which anyone can go to, are arguably the best part. You can sit next to all the fighters and get to meet a whole bunch of them.
