Default Brevin Knight released, C's should target him

http://www.charlotte.com/bobcats/story/178702.html

Knight is a solid player who has always racked up steals and assists. On paper, he'd seem to be a perfect fit for the C's. I'm sure Danny would love the luxury of having an experienced veteran who excelled at passing and defense come off the bench.

My only fear is that if we did sign him, Doc would give him way too many minutes and Rondo would rot on the bench at times. With the kind of upside he has on both sides of the court, Rondo still must be the starting PG and get serious minutes.

Worth looking into if you're the C's.

They really need a point guard who can defend because they are weak at 3 positions defensively but who can make the open jumpers that playing with Allen, PP, and Al will provide. Neither of those things is a strength of Knights.

First, while he's not a threat as a jump shooter, he is a really good defender.

But I strongly disagree that they need a point guard that can shoot. Allen and Pierce on the wings provides ample options to kickout for open shots. They need a point guard who can drive, dish and defend, and that's Rondo. And off the bench, that could be Brevin Knight.

And they aren't weak at 3 positions defensively. Within their team defense, Jefferson and Perkins are now the weakest links defensively as they've yet to show they can make the right decisions in rotating. However, they are both naturally gifted defensive players due to the athleticism, size and length, so all they need is experience.

Anyone who plays point for this team is going to be left wide open for a jumper almost every time the ball goes to Pierce or Al in the post. That is where the double will come from pretty much every time it comes from the perimeter. There is no question the ability to make the open shot is something you would look for in that spot when building a team around the 3 guys the Cs have.

The "our point guard doesn't need to be able to make open shots" seems like rationalization of why Rondo's woeful shooting doesn't matter.

You'd much rather have your good shooters be on the wings - like they are on the C's - then at the top of the key. You can live with your point guard not being a perimeter shooter, especially if he is a threat to penetrate.

A double on Jefferson is going to come from one of the wings, temporarily leaving either Paul or Allen open. The D will then have to rotate over to cover the strong side shooter, leaving Rondo open. If they choose to leave him open, he can and will burn them off the dribble, turning their defense into a mess. If they rotate to cover him, he'll get the ball to the weakside for an open jumper.

In short, this offense is going to be an absolute bytch to deal with for defenses and it all starts with the ability of Jefferson and Pierce to score at will, and is furthered by Allen's shooting ability and Rondo's speed and penetration.

If Tony Allen was our shooting guard, fine, then Rondo's perimeter shooting would be a problem. But with Allen and Pierce on the wings, I'd rather have speed at the point than a shooter.

Rondo and Tony Allen, not Ray Allen, are the Celtics best defenders.
That means 3-4-5 are below average defenders.
When Ray Allen is in, and I'm assuming he'll play the majority of minutes at 2, then it is 2-3-4-5.
Jefferson needs to step up and improve defensively.
Perkins gets into way too much foul trouble to play defense consistently.
The Celtics still need help badly to defend the 4-5 positions.
They'll have to live with Allen and Paul's subpar defense because those guys are the main scorers.

If the team is competitive, and if the D at the 4 & 5 spots improve, both Allen and Pierce will be fine defensively for the C's, particularly Pierce. Pierce has been an above average defender his entire career, and only recently has the poor defensive play of his teammates brought that standard down.

Despite what people say, the 2&3 aren't the problem. Last season it was Jefferson, Perkins, Wally S. and any other youngsters not named Tony Allen or Rondo. Sczerbiak was a particular problem, as he couldn't even stay with his own man, let alone rotate fast enough for the C's brand of team defense.

Jefferson and Perkins are the key. On any given night, the team's best 4 or 5 would tear us apart. They don't yet have the experience and court IQ to succeed in the team defense we employ. If they could get an experienced defensive player at either 4 or 5, that would be a great help.

Knight is a very good fit with the C's. You'd prefer to have a good perimeter shooting point, but how many of those are there in the league, and more importantly, how many of those can play D? Knight is a very good defender, and an even better fascilitator of the ball. I've been high on him for the c's for some time, and he'd be relatively inexpensive IMO.

As I said above, with the perimeter shooting this team has at 2 and 3, a good shooting point guard is not necessary. In fact I'd rather have the drive and dish type.
