This story even made it into the papers here in the UK where the reporter bemoaned our lack of decent-sized pigs.

Wonder if this will be considered true in about 6 months, the hog almost seems to be too big to have wandered through the woods for that long.. reminds me of all of the stories about the airman who killed that Bear after it ate a hiker.. may be an urban legend.

Well, although this is clearly a very large pig, it's a tiddler compared to some. From the Guardian:

"Stone's hog is a runt compared to China's biggest pig, which was 8ft 2in long, weighed 1,980lb and died, aged five, from lack of exercise, in his sty in the north-eastern province of Liaoning. In Taiwan, big pig contests are held, in which hogs are force-fed and then slaughtered to commemorate the lunar new year. This year, one of the pigs allegedly weighed 1,963lb.

"These are small fry next to Big Bill, from Tennessee, who died in 1933. He measured 5ft tall, 8ft 1in long, and is believed to have weighed 2,552lb. Big Norm, meanwhile, still resides in Hubbardsville, New York and is 8ft long and 1,600lb. "He's got a mind of his own," his owner, Kerry Dart, explained when Norm appeared at the state fair. "So you've got to create a situation where he doesn't have much choice but to do what you want him to do. So you had better have things really rugged and reinforced to create those situations, because he's got a lot of power in that 1,600lb.""

Come to find out it was a domestic pig that got too big and was released on a game preserve.. so much for another urban legend.
