For my body metabolic type, I can gain muscle pretty easily... but I also can pack on the fat as well, if I'm not busting ass at work... or... on/at other activities. Lately, I've been very active, and I feel pretty positive about it... but I'm always looking for healthy supplements. Thanks for the info on this. It sounds very interesting. It sounds like you need to pound on the protein. |

I hear ya on the protein. There's no way I can get more of it from a ratio standpoint... I try to stick to 1 to 1.5 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass now. ... looking over my fitday.com logs, that's around 175 grams of protein a day (thank god for Dymatize Elite Whey Butter Toffee flavor!) Before I started eating a clean bodybuilding style diet, I was an Atkins guy for about 5 or 6 years, and even now the only carbs I take in are fibrous carbs, limited fruits, and tons of leafy greens, everything else is protein and healthy fats / functional fatty acids. I just need to flat out eat more to bulk back up now that I've shed the body fat. For some reason now that I lost all that fat (not weight, but fat) I find it's much easier to lift big than it is to eat big... y'know? I'm not lazy in the gym anymore, but damn I'm lazy in the kitchen now. Edit: regarding carbs.... I should say, fibrous carbs, limited fruits, tons of leafy greens and beer. The most holy of all carbs. ![]() |

T-Shirt, bought some today from a local health food store. Got loose organic, non-flavored yerba mate and put it in a tea ball, bathed it with cold water first, then added hot (below boiling point) water. Waited about 4 minutes, and I can see exactly what you're saying about this stuff. Very pleasant tasting, almost like some green tea I've had, but gives you a boost with mental clarity and none of the undesired caffeine-like effects. No nervous energy, nothing. I refilled the cup several times during the afternoon, and the drink kept coming back with no diminishing in taste.
The best part is I had a very light lunch and maintained my energy level all afternoon without hunger cravings. Had multiple projects, and they're done. I'm going to order 1 pound and am now researching to find the best retailer online. Thanks for the heads up! |

For general health, not in moderation. Recent study shows that 3-4 drinks per day for a man, 2-3 for a woman, is better for you than not drinking at all, and that's not just wine, that's any ol' booze. For losing fat... yeah, it could be. I stalled out at 14% bodyfat until I cut the beer waaaay back, then continued on to 12-11%. I've stayed below the teens with my normal beer and scotch back to where it was pre fatloss, but I never have a regular beer, it's always a lowcarb one like Miller Lite or Michelob Ultra Amber (regular Ultra is crap).

As far as online.. I would highly recommend yerbamatecafe.biz ...I believe the Salante and Mahtay brands are specifically made for them, and they're both excellent, with a nice variety of flavors to keep it constantly interesting. Had the natural cinnamon flavored today... it was like drinking a granola bar, excellent taste. Loved it. And I'd recommend trying the traditional method with the mate' and bombilla. It's kinda fun, and the gourd seems to soften the flavor a bit. If you get a real gourd (this is the one I use with this bombilla) you have to cure it by letting some yerba and water sit in it for 24-48 hours, then scrape it out with a spoon, and it's good to go. This premium kit is new and looks perfect... if they had had it on their site a couple of weeks ago I probably would have ordered it instead. |

OK, here is my report: I did what ClevTrev did, went to the health food store and got an 8-ounce package of the loose organic stuff. I steeped it in a French press and drank about five cups. I felt a little light-headed for a while, like I was coming down with a mild migraine, but that quickly subsided and since then I've felt relaxed yet alert, and have comfortably focused on my work today without feeling anxious about it, which often happens. (I'm self-employed and hence often work on Sundays.) I like the taste, sort of a woody green-tea flavor. So far, so good. I'm looking forward to see how I feel tomorrow when I plan to go another round with the yerba. I'm always wary of the placebo effect with something new, but if I feel tomorrow like I do right now, this is one tremendous discovery.

I hadn't heard of this until you mentioned it, but saw today that 7-11 now is adding the stuff to their coffee, along with Ginseng and other "energy" type supplements, billing it as "Energy Coffee"
Of course, the way you described its preparation I'd have to think it doesn have any impact when 7-11 is involved in its preparation.

I know what you mean about the placebo effect. There are unfortunately very few things that I respond to beyond the second day. The majority of stuff for me is golden on day one, crap on day three and beyond. Classic non-responder with high hopes. Yerba was one of the few that didn't change for me from day one to week five, consistent across the board, earning a rare place on the near empty shelf of staples.Quote:
By the way, in regards to the thermos size I mentioned earlier... mine holds about 18 ounces of water. Pictured below with my Mate' (and a Patriots hat so you don't think it's some lame stock photo I found on the 'net )![]() |
