Default Question about Kenny Rogers.. "What Condition my Condition was in"

Guess I never thought about it before, but the other nite rented the Big Lebowski as I had not seen it in a long time. Put on the subtitles, a little hearing impaired, and for the first time paid attention to the words of "What condition my condition was in". At the end of the movie was paying attention to the credits and noticed that Kenny Rogers sung that song, kinda amazed as thought he was country mainstream, though some obscure 1 hit psychedelic band had sung that song. Anyways just interesting that he sung this song.

Some of the lyrics,

I woke up this mornin' with the sundown shinin' in
I found my mind in a brown paper bag within
I tripped on a cloud and fell-a eight miles high
I tore my mind on a jagged sky
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)

I pushed my soul in a deep dark hole and then I followed it in
I watched myself crawlin' out as I was a-crawlin' in
I got up so tight I couldn't unwind
I saw so much I broke my mind
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

(Yeah, yeah, oh-yeah, what condition my condition was in)

Someone painted "April Fool" in big black letters on a "Dead End" sign
I had my foot on the gas as I left the road and blew out my mind
Eight miles outta Memphis and I got no spare
Eight miles straight up downtown somewhere
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in

Anyone else remember his weekly tv show "Rolling On A River" that he did with his band "The First Edition"? I think it was in the early 70's.

Yeah, I remember being pretty amazed when I found out. It's such an incongruous song for him, as much as I like the song.

Yeah, Kenny was quite heavy in the middle early part of this career. A real heavy dude.

More importantly, The Big Lebowski not only has an excellent sound track, but is one of my favorites of all time. A great parody on life, and the frightening thing is, those of us who cut our formative years during the late 60s all know Jeff Lebowski (or someone like him) very well!

Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded — here and there, now and then — are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

You must be too young or too old.

One of those things if you would have to ask, you would never understand.
