Fire Could Affect Nation's Beer Supply

POSTED: 6:26 pm EDT October 3, 2006

Slideshow: Fire Threatens Part Of Nation's Beer Supply

The Federal Bureau Of Alcohol, Tobacco, And Firearms will investigate a fire in Yakima Valley, Wash., that could affect the nation's beer supply.

The fire broke out Monday at a 40,000 square foot warehouse where hops are stored.

Firefighters had to remove the warehouses' metal siding and spray water directly on the hops in order to contain the blaze.

No one was hurt but according to officials, the fire ruined roughly 4 percent of America's supply of hops.

Industry experts estimate the loss could amount between $3.5 million and $4 million.

Brewers use hops as flavoring for beer and ale.

Officials have yet to determine the impact the fire will have on brewers and the price of beer.

Not the point of this thread, but you gotta love how the Feds create an agency that lumps together Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.

As long as we are on the subject, one time I went to this restaurant in East Texas, I mean this was in the boonies, on a river with moss hanging everywhere. Anyway this restaurant, which drew a good business, also sold booze, firearms, and ammo to go. Now, that's quite a package.

Well, if it was hops for one of the mass producers of "beer" like Coors and Budweiser, then I would say that it is doing the US a favour.

As a personal note, I brew my own. Got two batches in primary right now. I wonder which kinds of hops will be affected?
