My man, Stephen Hawking lobbys to get the entire human race's eggs out of one risky basket...
http://apnews.myway.com/article/20060613/D8I7ADB81.html HONG KONG (AP) - The survival of the human race depends on its ability to find new homes elsewhere in the universe because there's an increasing risk that a disaster will destroy the Earth, world-renowned scientist Stephen Hawking said Tuesday. The British astrophysicist told a news conference in Hong Kong that humans could have a permanent base on the moon in 20 years and a colony on Mars in the next 40 years. "It is important for the human race to spread out into space for the survival of the species," Hawking said. "Life on Earth is at the ever-increasing risk of being wiped out by a disaster, such as sudden global warming, nuclear war, a genetically engineered virus or other dangers we have not yet thought of." ************* Word up is that although Hawking has been working out he'll still miss camp and start out as PUP. |

There's bound to be a planet out there with oceans full of beer and where it rains naked nymphomaniacs. When our lazy astronomers get off their behinds and find that planet, I'm in like Flynn.
Besides after playing all three games in the Doom series, I don't wanna get anywhere near Mars. |

No question that private enterprise will get there before the inept NASA govt crowd. I'd bet big bucks on a private moonbase before 2050 but I won't be around to collect. The technology is easier than it was in the 60s. Given supercomputer simulations and AI design techniques availble to multi-millionaires in the 2030s, a Richard Branson type could have his own moonbase system designed and built in that decade.

I hate passing up an opening to trash a Brit, but he said "humans could have a permanent base on the moon in 20 years"
Note the verb Hawk used. Very possible in a physical sense, which was what he was referring to. It's just engineering like we did 40 years ago plus big bucks. Obviously extremely improbable in a political sense. |
