Talk about fun for the feeble, I am an avid walker, this week been stuck thinking about this southern Rock thing...Charlie Daniels, Tom Petty, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allmans etc. Someone gave me a copy of White Mansion which is a pretty good CD, been listening to it all week now. Anyways thinking why there is so much passion for the "homeland" south of the Mason Dixon Line?? Is it some type of regional nationalism?? A lot seems to be based on the war or Yankee Agression that took place in the 1860's.
What I cannot compare it to is anything simlar in the North, specifically the NE, know J. Geils touched on it, Boston had it in its title...but the best I can come up with is the whiny Bee Gee's "going back to Massachusetts"!!! Maybe it is our names like Connecticut, Rhode Island or Massachusetts etc. That make it tough to rhyme, but that does not make much sense either. Need some enlightenment about this subject as I cannot figure it out, and keep coming up with answers that do not work really well when thought out.

Recently, just by chance I listened to a cd from the Monterey Interational Pop Festival ( I was driving my wife's new car and didn't know how to eject the cd, the cd was given to us by my brother-in-law from a stack of hundreds). So, cruising with the sun roof open on a great day and Otis Redding comes on, live. I've heard his "The Dock of the Bay" numerous overplayed times, but evidently never heard his live rendition of "Try a Little Tenderness". I was blown away. I'm sorry that I missed out on his greatness.

Steve Miller had Boston and New England in a few of his songs.

Whatever has been spoken of so far pales to the words and passion of any of the stuff originally mentioned in this post.... will have to ponder this whole thing some more...

Boston's fairly well repped by Aerosmith, Boston, J. Geils, the Cars, Juliana Hatfield, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, James Taylor, etc.
In their respective catalogues, I'm sure there's plenty of references to New England, even if it's not Sweet Home Alabama or Black Water.
