Default Favorite Albums

With all the favorite threads I thought I would add this. We did this some time ago.
My top ten albums are.
10. Boston - Boston
This is the only albums that I have owned in 8 track, Cassette, LP and CD. Always reliable.

9. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
Maybe over played on the radio but still a master piece of music.

8. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - The Beatles
Love the songs with Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! and A Day In The Life two of my favorites.

7. Aqualung - Jethro Tull
Great song writing, switching from great straight rock to acoustic melodies and back again.

6. Toys in the Attic - Aerosmith
I think that early Aerosmith is their best period with the fist 5 albums are absolute classics and this is my favorite of them.

5. Wish You Were Here - Pink Floyd
Was David Gilmour ever better. A sad album in some ways in regards to Syd Barrett, but that maybe why it is so good.

4. Book of Dreams - Steve Miller Band
An album I can pop in and it will take me back to good and bad times from youth.

3. Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
A great romantic album, the songs in this collection are very moving.

2. Thick As A Brick - Jethro Tull
This is what progressive rock should be. Great lyrics and the musicianship is exceptionally high. Every time I listen to it I come way with a different meaning to the song.

1. Abbey Road - The Beatles
To me this album has everything from great rock and roll (Come Together and I Want You), romantic ( Something and Here Comes the Sun), novelty songs(Maxwell's Silver Hammer and Octopus's Garden) and prog ( side 2).

Good question - Great Albums suggest to me that, top to bottom, start to finish, every song has to be great.

Pink Floyd obviously have a great run of albums that did exactly that.

The Beatles also had their share (Revolver is my favorite)

Led Zeppelin have plenty that rank up there, so to the Doors, Paul Simon and other singer songwriters like James Taylor

U2 (The Joshua Tree) would get a vote from me (though its soo been played to death - its still a great album)

The Eagles Hotel California (again, too overplayed for me - but a great album)

Many of Peter Gabriel's albums fit the criteria, from his post-Genesis work (yes, he was the original singer in Genisis) up to "So"

Some of the more underrated albums for me are things like

The Band - Music from the Big Pink

Also, Robbie Robertson of The Band did 2 solo albums that are outstanding start to finish

The first, "Robbie Robertson" was produced by Daniel Lanois (who produced The Joshua Tree) and features songs with Peter Gabriel, U2, and tons of other guests

The second solo "Storyville" has a great New Orleans' bent to it and again, start to finish is filled with great music that really comes alive in the headphones

The impossible, but I'll try :

(Naming no more than 1 CD per band)

10. Rush - Moving Pictures. Could have picked a bunch of others from Rush.
9. Iron Maiden - Powerslave. First 4 with Bruce all about equal.
8. Guns n Roses - Appetite for Destruction
7. Jethro Tull - Aqualung.
6. Elton John - Too Low for Zero. Not considered a classic but this is my list
5. Dream Theater - Awake.
4. Yes - Close to the Edge
3. Arena - Songs from the Lions' Cage.
2. Marillion - Misplaced Childhood. Could have names any of the first three Marillion.
1. Therion - Theli. Best CD of all time. Pure heaven. Metal with choir vocals.

(*****, no Beatles). Add Sgt. Pepper and make my list 11.

Even though it is not on a lot of list, but the more anyone thinks about it, Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel" album. The number of hits that came off of it, like Roni', My Prerogative, Every Little Step, etc. The more I got to here it, probably should be a classic album. Janet Jackson's "Rythem Nation" is real good.

But as a whole, for what I own,
Patra "Queen of the Pack"
Lauryn Hill "Miseducation of Lauryn Hill"
Eric B. and Rakim "Follow the Leader"
Public Enemy "Fear of a Black Planet"
N.W.A. "Straight Outta Compton"
Tupac "Tupac's Greatest Hits"
Mary J Blige "Share My World"

I own those ladies(Mary J Blige, Patra, and Lauryn Hill) albums, and not ashamed to admit I love their stuff.

I'm shocked not to see Marvin Gaye represented on your list - not to mention Aretha.

While we're on the subject of the monumental contributions of African Americans to our favorite music (and let's face it - rock and roll/jazz/soul IS an African American invention - just ask the Beatles who influenced them and you'll begin to find that every modern music traces back to turn of the century jazz)... I've gotta give a shout out to my man James Brown

James doesn't get "sole" credit for his "soul" music though - I'm a HUGE "JB Horns" fan with Maceo Parker, Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis kickin out some of the funkiest grooves that made James Brown "James Brown"

If you want a more contemporary take on all that music spend the $15 for Maceo Parker's "Live on Planet Groove" - starting off with a good 15 minute rendition of "Shake Everything You Got" with the funkiest drum/saxaphone solo ever.

That's a must have album for any collection.

American rock 'n roll is highly influenced by R&B, a lot of Euro rock 'n roll has more classical influences. I would say that the Beatles are more in the latter. Yes, they showed their R&B influences on some of the earlier CDs but starting in the mid section of their career they were much more classically influenced. This is why a lot of the music I like is the progressive and euro metal bands because the classical influences do way more for me than R&B influences. I hate blues too which is why I hate a lot of Led Zeppelin.
