Aw Geeze Eedit - we're really losing some of the great comedic minds in recent months...
While that personae certainly wouldn't work today, she certainly represented what was a common trait among mothers and wives of her era who generally took a back seat to the will of the husband And by painting a caricature as she did, she held up a mirror to women throughout the nation and likely prompted them to change, with her character showing on occassion that Edith too could be smart and strong. (That being said - I wouldn't mind my wife being a little more subservient at times!)
