"Epic"? Not quite. He was a commercial heavyweight at making lightweight music. By its very nature, "pop" music is transitory ... sort of like bubbles in a soda popping and fizzing and putting on a show before the beverage goes flat.

Thriller could be considered "epic". Other than that he was run of the mill.

We could both name some real "epic" music

He was in the public eye - people talking about him posthumously is one of the prices of that. Let's face it, he opened it up with his plastic surgeries, his "Jesus Juice" - he was a WEIRD dude. Talented but, ultimately, more weird than talented and that's saying a lot.

I agree with you 1000%; he was beyond weird. Kind of sad in a way that many talented people are unable to handle the fame that goes along with that. At some point in his life, the train really came off the tracks and he went down some bizzare path of self destruction.

And you have every right in the world to not be a fan of or appreciate his music, nothing wrong with that. If 50 cent died tomorrow, I'd feel bad for him and his family, but I wouldn't miss his "music" one bit.

My issue mainly is people making light of and jokes about his passing, very pathetic, let the guy rest in peace, maybe in death he'll get the peace he obviously did not have in life.

Thanks for keeping this discussion on a civil level too, I appreciate it.........

I may have mis-stated what I meant, I actually like his old stuff and I have Off the Wall and Thriller. When I said "he won't be missed" I just meant he had nothing left. There would be no 50 show tour. No new CD. He was done. And I still believe that, but I wasn't trying to suggest his past accomplishments were nothing; it's just sad watching him from Thriller (and Bad to some extent) and before and seeing where he ended up - as a frail, weak drug addict. It's just very sad - but I don't think he had any more to offer.

"Off the Wall" was very good. I can see the talent in the "Jackson 5" even though that style isn't my thing. But after "Thriller", which was great, Jacko was just another guy. Listen to "Bad" or anything after and tell me that he made a great album after "Thriller". Unless you're a fanboy you can't, because he didn't.
I'll admit that Michael had some great singles after "Thriller." You can't deny that songs such as "Remember The Time" and "Man In The Mirror" are great songs that still hold up well today. But you are right in that his albums as a whole after "Thriller" are just weak. I can still listen to "Thriller" today from start to end and not skip over a single song. Yet with an album such as "Dangerous" I'm skipping to the few songs I care for then I'm done.

I'll have to give Dream Theater a chance one of these days. The only thing I know about the band is they are prog rock which given some of the bands I'm heavily into (Pink Floyd, Yes, Echolyn) I might enjoy their stuff.

Man in the Mirror was very good, as was Dirty Diana. Largely it was lightweight compared to Beat It, Billie Jean, etc. It's a shame when great artists stay at their peak for a short time - whenever one of my favorites hits a peak I always hope they can stay there for a while; sometimes they do, often they don't.

From what I was reading, Jackson couldn't sing anymore and would have had to lip sync through the shows. It was a disaster waiting to happen.

It would have been nothing more than a freak show.

I'll lock it. I see nothing productive coming further from this thread.
