Firstly this is a mock with no trades

1A Dont'a Hightower

Was in my very first mock on this thread. Stupidly took him out but really want him back in again (and not just after tonights game). I firmly believe that we have to find players who can make a dramatic impact on our defense. Hightower's versatility, game intelligence and impactful plays will do just that.

1B Mark Barron

My other impact player. He is no strong safety only. Makes excellent reads on passing plays and is always around the play. Could sometimes take better angles on running plays on occasion but is always around the ball. I think he'll be a regular pro-bowler (and unlike Meriweather, justifiably so).

Both Barron and Hightower have got reputations as leaders on that Alabama defense and Barron in particular is known for his work in the film room. They sound like Belichick guys and I can't think why we wouldn't want two leaders and stars of one of the best defenses in the history of college football.

2A Andre Branch

I don't really like the pass rush options in this draft. However, Branch looks to fulfill the BB criteria for an edge player. Has the required length and bulk, can work from a three point stance or standing up, has dropped back into coverage and whilst probably not a 10 sack plus man, at least initially, will set the edge and his constant effort will give OT's fits from time to time. Had over 10 sacks this year so he's no slouch.

2B Brian Quick WR Appalachian St.

There wasn't much else I liked at this point in the draft (I'm not a fan of Dwight Jones or Vinny Curry atm) and I'm really intrigued by what Quick can offer with his 6'5" 220lb size. Hopefully we'll pick up Brandon Lloyd in FA which will give Quick the time to improve his currently raw skills. But a lot of it's there - good catching ability, the ability to box out defenders, high pointing catches, YAC etc. Would be an awesome red zone advantage.

3 Jamell Fleming CB Oklahoma

The other day I was trawling prospect youtube videos. Looked at one of Claiborne just shutting down his side of the field, amazing performance. The next video I watched was Jamell Fleming going up against Marvin McNutt. There was little difference between the two videos - I was really impressed. OK, there'll be better WR's than McNutt in the bigs, but even so, I think Fleming would be a strong addition. He also always has an eye for the turnover. This pick could also be Casey Hayward who I like just as much.

I didn't mock the fourth round, but I'd take Shea Mclellin, DaJohn Harris or Malik Jackson here.

Great job manxman, without being able to predict trades I think you nailed it. There don't seem to be any obvious flaws and some good creative picks. The only think I would disagree with with the first round is that I don't see Kuechly getting past Philly at 15. Other than that I like it and you've got some creative picks with Still in the top 10 and Sanders in the 1st round.

In terms of the Pats picks, while they might not be the exact picks I would make, I certainly would be happy with all of these. Hightower has been getting a ton of love here lately and justifiably so. And Barron has been a favourite on here for a while. I also have to take a look at Jamell Fleming because I'm intruiged.

Once again, great job.

Granted Upshaw's sack was a gift. But, he showed good burst on a couple of option plays. Played Jefferson and forced him to pitch and then tracked down the rb. Doing the job of two defenders. I think we might have to trade up over the Jets and Steelers for Upshaw or Hightower. CBS rankings has Upshaw at 21 and Hightower at 26. M Barron at 36. Give up a 3 to move up and get Hightower. Keep fingers crossed on Barron. The Jets really need help at safety. Smith sucks and Leonhard is coming off of surgery. I think we address S thru free agency. How bout trade up for Hightower. Give up a 3. Fletcher Cox at 1b. Vinny Curry at 2a. A db at 2b. Back to the 3-4.

DL

Veteran run-stuffing 2-gapper, Wilfork and Deaderick

Depth
Brace, Love, Cox, Wright or Pryor

LB
Ninko - Mayo - Spikes - Hightower

Curry, M. Anderson, J. Cunningham, D. Fletcher

CB

McCourty, Dowling, Arrington, 2ND rounder and one from (Moore, Molden or N. Jones)

S

P. Chung and hopefully Dashon Godson

Depth Ihedigbo, Barrett and a rookie FS type 4th rounder

I really like Fleming too, but I only saw one game of his, the same one vs Iowa. Admittedly I only watched it to see McNutt , but loved what I saw from Fleming. At the time I figured he was a sophomore or even a freshman because I thought there was no way a player this good is draft eligible. I would have know about him surely! Wrong.

There are some thing that worry me though. It's the only game I saw of his, I like to see at least 2, but usually more. McNutt looked OK, but his quarterback is the suck. It makes me wonder if Fleming looked better because of him.

The second thing that worries me is his speed and quickness. For a 5'11" CB, his 4.54 40 (NFL Draft Scout) has me wondering. If he does well at the combine, he's somebody I want badly!

I have no faith in any of our CBs right now, but it's ok because this draft has some good ones.

Couple of thoughts:

I love Barron and don't get why people like Lester over him. Every game I watch I thought it was clear who was the better safety.

Don't see Tampa (Blount) or KC (Charles) taking RBs.

The play where Upshaw forced the pitch and then chased down the LSU rb and made the tackle was an unreal play. I think w/ the DMVP Upshaw will be taken b/t picks 10-16. ILB always drop, and w/ the BC kid in the draft, there's a chance we don't need to trade up for Donta.

I now like Hightower over Upshaw.

Upshaw looks too slow in coverage and probably too short (6'1). Hightower, like Scriz said, can play multiple roles.

Would be interesting to see him as a 34 OLB.

All this 3-4 OLB obsession is for nought if we don't get a 3-4 DE that can play the 5 technique.

There is 1 DE that I really like that should be available in the offseason. Calais Campbell is a free agent and I think he is a perfect fit no matter what defensive front we play. I think he ideally suited to RE in a 3-4, but can also play DT or DE in a 4-3. I think he is a pro bowl caliber player that still hasn't reached his peak yet. If Arizona don't franchise or re-sign him, I would make a big offer to him becuase I think he could be a key part of this defence. Consistently picking in the late 20' and 30's in the 1st round means it is going to be difficult to find that ideal DE, so I think FA could be the route to go.
