Default Using next years picks this year....SPECULATION

Ok, I am going to start off by saying, I expect a lot of you guys to take cheap potshots at me, but hey this is a forum for discussions, opinions and analysis so here goes:

1) Hypothetically, the front office might know that with that Matt Walsh guy getting away with a felony (illegal taperecording), it could mean that at the May 13th meeting or soon thereafter we could expect some punishment to draft picks in 2009....
2) BB+SP run thier business like a stockbroker always making every trade which will maximize value to the team. Eventually, in theory, maximum value could come in trading out of a future years picks and into a current draft.
3) We just came off a 18-1 year, setting records which could last 20-40 or more years, by a few strategic picks and trades we kraft a truly unstoppable juggernaught.
4) What about the impact of future potential uncapped years? That could play into such consideration.

Ok so basically, IF we suspect we will loose more picks in 2009, and IF we see good value, just maybe we could trade some top picks 1 and or 2 and or 3 from the 2009 draft...........

But hey, Let's enjoy today!!

Well, you're assuming BB and Kraft lied to everyone. And if we didn't have a one, it would be a 2 and a 3 penalty. So then you have nothing in the first 3 rounds next year.

We could have done that last year and gotten David Harris from the Packers. The depth at CB means we can move up a bit in the 2nd to take the CB we thought should have gone in the 1st round.

that is all interesting.

I like the way you think, but i hope the pats aren't guilty of anymore. We've all suffered enough.

Even IF it turned out we were guilty... Goodell would go after 2010 picks, were he using that as punishment.

I don't discount this as quickly as others... But I think there are other factors in addition to a Commissioner who is out of control and prone to take away a team's 1st round pick any time a ball boy sneaks into an opposing team's walkthrough with a videotape.

Consider that the Patriots have Moss for the next three years... they have every incentive, within the constraints of the annual salary cap, to get better younger players in sooner rather than later - letting them develop so there they are ready for the Patriots future transition, as well as helping them win NOW.

Add to that some question about what the NFL will look like in the next CBA or in a capless year, and there's a number of factors that might lead them to use top draft picks (i.e. 2009 and even 2010) now.

There'd have to be some guys that the Pats REALLY like now to make them do it - and I tend to doubt there are - but overall, there's no reason not to bounce the concept around and consider it.
