2012 prospects - TEs - running thread
Rather than having threads dedicated to individual players I think it’s a good idea if we were to have running threads based on position with regular updates after colleges games are played.
Anyway, for this threat I want to focus on one of my favorite positions: the tight end! TFB is absolutely ruthless with multiple TE sets, and his use of the no huddle offense was like slow poison on a dagger into the gut of the Dolphin’s defense. I’d like our next offseason to expand on those capabilities by:
- Getting a blocking TE who is a true hybrid player (TE/RB/FB)
- Having a receiving threat like Hernandez who can also block well
By having a guy on the field who can block at the line but can also run the ball, block for the runner, and run nice routes, we’d be vastly increasing the difficulty of defending against our offense by being able to run the no huddle and not needing to substitute because that Hybrid player can be used in whatever manner is most damaging to the defense. Even though he’s a Jet I’m a big fan of John “The Terminator” Connor, he obviously has ability as a FB/RB but he also has a compact body (5’11, 245lbs) which will allow him to have more leverage against defenders than taller TE of similar weight. His compact frame will also give him and advantage in terms of cutting, enabling him to run routes that would be very difficult for a taller TE, and since defenses aren’t used to defending a TE like that his relative effectiveness would increase significantly.
Next on my list is someone more of the Hernandez mold, so far I like Dwight Jones out of UNC, who is technically a WR but whose body-type suggest solid TE blocking ability (6’2, 230lbs), I think he’d be too big and physical for most corners to effectively deal with and he’d be too fast for most linebackers.
Now, it’s obvious that we’re not going to draft Connor but who would have similar body dimensions and potential that could be effective as a Swiss-Army hybrid player (TE/FB/RB)? Do you think Jones could function well in that grey role which would both overwhelm and confuse defenses, if not who is your choice?
Also, feel free to start your own position specific threads as well.
