Default Some Deep Sleepers

Here are a few defensive players with rd 6 and below projections on NFL draftscout that may have starting potential in the NFL:

CB Terence Wheatley: Alot of people like him and he'll probably go in rd 4 now. So he no longer really qualifies for this list. Visiting the Pats this week.

CB Isiah Gardner, Maryland: An elite athlete at a big school with good production.

CB Marcus Walker, Oklahoma: Shoulder problems. Had a stellar junior campaign with 3 INTs and 9 PBU. Honorable mention all big 12 two years in a row.

FS Darnell Terrell, Missouri: Has good hands, speed, size, leaping ability.

FS David Roach, TCU: super athlete.

3-4, 4-3 OLB Hilee Taylor, NC: 4.6 speed, led tarheels with 10.5 sacks, 16 TFLs.

4-3 OLB Larry Grant: only OSU d-player to shine in National title game. Outplayed Laurinitis. Had 5 sacks, 9.5 TFLs in his only year a sa full time starter. ran a 6.9 3-cone.

4-3 OLB Marcus Richardson, Troy: Played well at Hula Bowl, great quickness (6.7 3-cone), power (36' VJ) speed (4.6 40).

3-4, 4-3 OLB Curtis Gatewood, Vandy: elite athletic tools, played out of position in college at DE. Tough SEC player. Good special teams candidate who could transition to back up 3-4 OLB or drop weight and play 4-3 OLB.

ILB Jameel McClain, Syracuse: Huge powerful plugger with decent quickness. Played DE as a junior and had 9.5 sacks.

ILB Danny Lansanah, UConn: Big powerful player. Had a 39" VJ, a 4.7 40 and a 4.17 3-cone at 245 lbs. Also had 4 INTs, 14 TFLs and 3 PBU as a senior. 4 INTs as a junior, 2 INTs as soph, so he can make plays.

DT Teraz McCray, Miami: good production as a senior for a DT, with 6 sacks and 10.5 TFLs. Good athlete for a 296 lber, with a 5.06 40, 27 reps and a 29'' VJ- all better results than GLENN DORSEY. As a comparison, Dorsey ran a 5.12, had 27 reps and a 25.5 VJ at 297 lbs. Dorsey had 7 sacks and 12.5 TFLs.

Even Longer shots worth a look:

CB Terrell Vinson, Purdue: led the Big 10 in PBU. 5 Ints, 13 PBU his senior season. Small, 4.5 speed and a 38'' VJ. No info on his agility drills, so I'm guessing here, but worth a look because he is very aggressive playing the run. Very tough.

DT, 3-4 DE Barry Booker, VT: Solid production for a big program (4 sacks, 10.5 TFLs, 2 FF). Decent speed (5.06), lower body strength (30.5") for a 6'4'' 285 lber. Short arms are a concern, needs to gain strength. A project pick. Maybe better as a 1 gap penetrator (24 QB pressures).

DE/DT: Ervin Baldwin, Michigan State: had 8.5 sacks, 18.5 TFL as a senior juco transfer. Failed to impress at Texas vs Nation all star game. But has very long arms, big hands, decent speed and tenacity. Played NT in dime sits for MSU, interior pass rusher. At 6'2'' 270 is a good inside pass rusher, can play the undertackle. Worth a look based on college production alone.

Nice list Pony. I appreciate the effort. I think I have 8-10 that aren't on your list and will post them tomorrow. Relatives here now. Ugh.

Hey Pony ... any 260lb fat guys that can catch a little and can run a 4.5 > 40? You know I dream every year for a battering ram FB ... why should this year be any different?

Those linebackers you listed better weigh at least 245 or they're not a good fit for the Pats defense. We seem to put a premium on size for the LB department.

I think that 240 lbs would be fine.

Taylor - 6'2.5 and 242 lbs
Larry Grant - 6'1 and 235 lbs
Marcus Richardson - 6' and 235 lbs
Curtis Gatewood - 6'2 and 248 lbs.
Jameel McClain - 6' 7/8" and 249 lbs
Danny Lansanah - 6' 1/2" and 244 lbs

Throw in Jeremy Leman - 6'1.5" and 245 lbs.

Sounds like my Uncle Ralph fits the bill... 300 lbs; slow as molasses; keeps bumping into things. Can catch a beer behind his back.

Seriously... it looks like Owen Schmitt of WVU could be available in rd 6-7.

Or he could be gone in round 3 or 4 (seriously).

Yeah, he and Goff seem to be the prospects with the biggest difference in grades, anywhere from the #60s to #260s

Another is Mackenzie Bernadeau of Bentley, a mauler at D2 and a projected guard who under the right coaching, such as that from one of the best in the business in Dante Scarnecchia, could emerge as a starting guard and at the very least, provide the Oline with great depth.

Alright then... I'll go with Peyton Hillis, Carl Stewart out of Auburn, or Marcel Reese out of Washington (more of an H-back or Larry Centers FB). It's rare you see a FB drafted before rd 6 anyway.
