Default 2012 Compensatory Picks

Coming off a lock out that shortened the free agency period substantially, a number of players and teams have opted to sign 1 YEAR contracts. Frankly, I think it will be interesting where the pieces fall come next off season when compensatory picks are handed out for players like Matt Roth (JAX), Shaun Ellis (NE) and Barrett Rudd (TEN).

While some teams like the Eagles won't be earning any comp picks, teams like the Raiders will take home a healthy load of picks with the loss of Robert Gallery, Zach Miller and Nnambi Asomugha.

Without any picks after round 4, the Patriots may (again) look to move one of the extra first round or second round picks, rather than trading up to get any one prospect.

Stay tuned.

I believe we'll get a fourth round pick for B.M. and we'll use a 1st, 2nd and whatever else to draft Brewster C Ohio State. Best looking center prospect since Mangold and he'll protect Brady to end his career and Mallett to start his.

Will probably be a top 15-20 pick because so many teams are in need of a center and this years crop was horrible. (after 2007 imagine letting Giants get him)

With our second 1st round pick, we trade it for a first round in 2013 and a second in 2012. With the second round pick we receive, would not be at all surprised to see BB trade it for a pick in 2013.

As a kid I wanted a pony for Christmas, and as an adult I wanted a pony with an OLB on top of it, but I don't see it happening.

If you're referring to Brandon McGowan, he was cut, so the Pats would get no compensatory credit for him in the 2012 draft.

As far as I understand how the compensatory thing works, the only FAs the Pats might get credits for in 2012 are:
- Ojinnaka (currently signed with STL)
- Page (currently signed with PHL)
- Graham (signed with WAS, but seems unlikely to stick there)

Balanced against those credits might be the signing of Shaun Ellis, though he's a 12-year vet and I'm not sure that counts.

Bottom line is that I don't think we should expect anything more than maybe a 7th round comp pick in 2012, if that.

I have to agree with you. I seriously doubt we get any comp picks, maybe one at the most.

However I think BB will have some opportunities to trade some excess camp talent for some low round conditional draft picks as we get closer to cut down dates.

He might have had a deal cooking for Maneiri or Levoir but with Roth getting carted off the field yesterday, that might not go through now.

Pretty sure he was referring to Meriweather and not McGowan.

The length of one's tenure has nothing to do with the Compensatory formula. The primary item is the contract. Ellis was a $4 million contract. But it only offsets one of the players the Pats lost, IF those players are eligible. And that will depend on their contract.

A player with 10 accrued seasons can give a max of a 5th round draft pick, regardless of other factors.

I cannot imagine that we garner any Comp Picks in 2012, for the reasons you gents ascribed.

And, anyway: Any discussion of Stomper pertains to the 2013 Comp Picks.

***

Personally, I'd hate to see us just let Stomper hit Free Agency IF he has the kind of year that I've been expecting of him.

However, something is clearly In The Wind...

If we end up bringing in somebody who can play, to combine with Sanders, young Dowling ~ who I consider destined for Free Safety ~ and perhaps one of the young Vets...I think we will be just fine, and quite possibly IMPROVED at Free Safety, considering young MeriWeather's Wayward Ways.

***

Furthermore, considering the Supply + Demand picture around the league at Free Safety, there's a distinct possibility ~ especially if a new contract can be worked out, beforehand ~ that, despite our theoretically appearing to be motivated Sellers...we could reap a SWEET package of Picks for our young, richly talented, multiple All Pro Free Safety!!

I see it exactly the same way, and I'm crossing my fingers that he will pick up those spare picks later this month.

Otherwise...anybody have the current draft pick tally? IIRC it's heavily top-loaded, with 2 1sts, 2 2nds and no 5th or 6th? That's a guaranteed recipe for fan frustration, as they'll surely trade down to recoup those late picks as well as trading forward to stock up for 2013!
