I think you're right.

We would need to trade up to get him, he's so versatile. The bloodlines, etc.

I wouldn't want to be like the Steelers in 1989 when they had two picks in the first round and ended up blowing it, not trading up to get Andre Rison.

The 1989 NFL Draft: The Year the Steelers Had Two First Round Selections - Behind the Steel Curtain

Even today, all these years later, the draft is still an art not a science. As Bill Parcells said recently on the draft tv show, it's players wearing pads and helmets not Tebucky Jones running the forty, that needs to be ultimately looked at.

Who's going to back up Brady at that point? Crompton? Matt Gutierez? Testaverde? It seems a big ask to get a quarterback this late in the offseason, whether by draft or free agency, and have him conversant enough in the Pats offensive system to be the primary backup in September.
Irish Hooligan likes this.

A young, reliable backup is gold, especially given BB's spotty record of picking QBs. I'm not trading Hoyer for a 2.

Gosselin could easily be tipping off who is looking to trade down.
FWIW in the actual article he does name the team, not just the slot...

Exactly - the slot means very little. The team/player fit is where it is at.

So let's imagine that Gosselin's sources are accurate. You're sitting at 17 and Jordan, Quinn, Watt, Amukamara, Costanzo etc. are all on the board. What do you do? Personally, I'd be on the phone trying like made to trade up from 28.

Not five minutes ago I was considering of the wisdom of trying to draft Jordan and Watt in this scenario. It would be an expensive front line, but Wow!

I'm over it now, though. Trading up for Amukamara makes sense, since he can play corner or safety and provide value on punt returns also. I guess if I liked Constanzo more I'd grab him, but I'd be content to wait to see if he makes it to 28.

Well, this is fun.

What he's saying is: there are teams desperate for quarterbacks who like the quarterbacks on offer enough to go for them in the first round.

We should know with the first pick. If Carolina really do take Newton then the rush may be on and he could be right. Still, I'd bet that several teams would hang back to see if they could pick up their guy in the late first. (Jonathan Kraft said on ESPN the other day that taking a quarterback in the first round was preferable for the extra rookie contract year, even if you might still get him in the second.) Either way it's good for the Pats -- either front seven players fall or they have very valuable commodities to trade at 17 and 28.

Fairley and Suh would definately be interesting but i doubt it's going to happen...they have far bigger needs.

Somebody should make sure Andy Hart doesn't see THIS mock. Robert Quinn available at 20 and the Pats PASS. Get your resumes ready because on Sunday there might be an opening at PFW if this were the result.
