Default Martez Wilson

Played ILB in 2010 but has the size (6-4/250) to play OLB in the 3-4 and plays more like a DE. Has experience in multiple LB positions, at defensive end, in special teams and as a situational pass rusher so is a 4 down player which BB likes… 4.59 40 time…112 tackles…4 sacks… 3 FF… 1 INT and a partridge in a pear tree in 2010.

I actually like him at the top of the 2nd round. Anybody else have thoughts on him? I know there is a slight injury concern but that hasn't kept the Pats from drafting someone before (Gronk).

Here is my take on Wilson:
Positives-Good size, moves well in space, has speed. Moves sideline to sideline well. Decent tackler
Negatives-lacks explosion in his first step, can be swallowed up by Oline man. Seems to think about what is happening rather than just react to the read and make the play, if that makes sense. Did not see any sort of pass rush moves.

Not sure what I think. It is hard to see a guy who played ILB and project him to OLB. I do not see a guy who can set the edge at all, but could cover a TE no problem. Reminds me of a Gary Guyton type.

I expect Wilson will have a lot more value for other teams than for the Patriots. He's arguably the best ILB prospect in a draft that's very thin at the position, so a team with an actual ILB need is bound to rate him higher.

I remember reading somewhere that Belichick once said that his OLBs almost need to be college DEs since he wants them to have experience with the hand games that go on between a DE and an OT. As an ILB, Wilson doesn't have that.

Here's what Sideline Scouting has to say about him. Even though he played ILB this past year he is more of a DE in his playing style so he won't project as an ILB in the NFL. At Illinois they moved him all over the field from ILB to OLB to DE to take advantage of matchups. That versatility is what I think makes him intriguing.

I've been really interested in Wilson lately. I haven't seen enough tape of him to have an informed opinion, but at a reported 6'4" 250lbs and a sub 4.6 40, he has the rare measurables BB looks for at OLB. I'm big on the Aldon Smith bandwagon right now, but it's beginning to look like he and Quinn may both be gone by 17. Wilson has that same type of size, but seems to be even faster. I'd love to see us take an OLB in the first 2 rounds. Wilson could be an interesting fallback plan if Smith or Quinn are unobtainable.

Thanks for the info. Up till now, I really knew nothing about him. Not ready to say "yea or nay" for the Pats, but at least now I have a little something to compare other candidates to. Good work!

Agreed. He is not just an ILB. He's played OLB in 2007/08 and was a WR coming out of HS so he's only been learning defense for four years and been able to do everythng his coaches asked of him.

Versatility is an important word when it comes to BB and drafting players.

BIG fan of Martez Wilson. Thoughts...

~ He actually IS experienced at Defensive End, having starred, there, in High School.

~ He's played plenty of Flanker in College.

~ But I'm afraid Sister Pat is probably right, as she is wont to be: teams in need of MidFielders will value him more highly than we're likely to.
