Default Casserly previews draft

Charlie Casserly writes a few notes about the draft, speculating on the trade value of the top pick. He comments on how hard it will be to trade the #2 pick for the Pats, due to the $30 million guaranteed that has to be paid out, which most teams are reluctant to do.

Other notes: McFadden seems to be most tradeable commodity at this point, if he declares. The success of Peterson may prompt teams to trade up to acquire an elite talent. Dolphins will look to trade out of #1.

Scouts around the league see Matt Ryan as the consensus #1 QB, but not judged to be a special talent, the kind that teams will trade up for. Most feel he is a better prospect than B. Quinn, without the raw talent of J. Russell but with a shorter length to impact. Some liked him better than Russell. Brohm consensus #2. Then Woodson.

Interesting. I see Brady Quinn as being at the same level as Ryan/Brohm/Woodson. If I'm the Falcons or Bears or somebody else in the top half of the draft, I'd go after Quinn with my second rounder and a second or third in 2009.

Then you get a QB with top-half of the first round talent without using up that pick.

I don't think Cleveland is in a rush to trade him, but if they get offered the late first they used on him, or an early second plus something in 2009, I think they'll bite. Anderson is the real deal and they'll sign him or franchise him. They won't risk a 1st and 3rd tender.

Brady Quinn has the added bonus of being exposed to an NFL offense for a full season.

We've seen one year wonders before. Anderson needs a second year before I'd be trading Quinn. His completion% is bad and his QB rating had dropped to 13th from the top five. I do think he's for real but Scott Mitchell says to wait a year.
