Default 2008 Mock

I don't know many of these players and I'm sure you guys have more imput than I do. Anyone we take in the first 10 picks( if BB doesn't trade down) should be a Good player to help us.
Thoughts

New England Patriots: Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas
I can't believe New England will go 19-0 and draft in the top five come next April.
How ridiculous is that? Whom do the Patriots take up here?
They don't really need anything, except for a cornerback if
Asante Samuel leaves. But it's still too early to select any corner.
The Patriots may decide to pick the best player available, which is easily
Darren McFadden. If they're scoring 41 points per game right now,
how sick are they going to be with McFadden and Laurence Maroney
rotating at running back?

. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (F/ SF) – Chris Long, DE, Virginia
Wow. Who got the best of this trade? Joe Staley better be a pretty darn good player.
The Pats will seize this rare opportunity to take the best guy on their board.
While some defensive players may be ranked a little higher, Long is accustomed
to the 3-4 scheme and will add youth along the defensive line.
His no-quit motor and versatility fit perfectly into the New England system.

8 Patriots Kenny Phillips Safety Miami FL
It just doesn't seem fair that the Patriots could have a top ten pick
next year thanks to the 49ers. If they are picking this high, expect them
to target a defensive back for the second year in a row. They've moved
Brandon Merriweather to cornerback, so there's still a need to depth at
safety and Phillips has the ability to be Rodney Harrison's replacement.

Jake Long OT Michigan
Note: The Patriots look unstoppable.
Imagine if they get their hands on the top tackle in this years draft?

Laurinaitis, James, ILB Ohio State
The Patriots are not only the best team in football; they are by far the smartest.
Trading a late 1st rounder last year to the Niners was a steal, and it looks like
they are going to get an opportunity to grab a top 5-10 pick. The problem,
and a real good problem at that, is that the Pats are loaded and don’t need
any real help. The positions that could use some upgrading are ILB where
they have an aging Bruschi and Seau, and also CB where they run the risk
of losing franchise player Asante Samuel. Because the value is best with
Laurinaitis, I have them going with him. He is a perfect fit for their defensive
scheme and will become the next great LB in their system, as he is in my
opinion just as good of a prospect as Patrick Willis. There will be a lot of
temptation to grab McFadden here, but the Pats have a very deep RB stable
and I think they will hold off. If I were the Pats I would look to acquire multiple picks and trade out of this spot as a lot of teams will want to move up to grab McFadden and they can certainly get a LB or CB later in the first round.

Dan Connor, LB, Penn State
If there's any team in the draft that's likely to trade down, it's New England.
But trading into or out of the top five is VERY difficult due to salary
cap ramifications.
So what is a powerhouse team like New England going to do
? If they're at the #4 spot, trading to #5 makes sense (if the team at #5 is interested)
, but projecting trades is an exercise in futility. Either way, I imagine that the
Pats would take the best linebacker in the draft. Connor is a remarkably talented
LB who would be a great fit for a talented-but-aging Patriots linebacking corps.
Keep in mind that Tedy Bruschi and Junior Seau will be free agents following
this season.

Youth along the line? Huh? The Patriots have a deep line and not one of them is pushing 30!

8 Patriots Kenny Phillips Safety Miami FL

Wonder when this was written. Meriweather is decidedly a safety. Though Phillips isn't a bad choice.

Jake Long OT Michigan

Works for me!

Talented? Sure. Great Fit? At 232 lbs? Hmm.

If the Chris Long mock is the same one I saw it also had the pats picking Colt Brennan in the 3rd round! How daft would that be?

You should probably give that site credit then, that's plagiarism, dude.

As for the Pats pick, they will certainly land a quality prospect.

A couple things...

1) You keep stating a 'top 5' pick. As it stands today, the pick would be between 4th and 7th overall depending on tie breakers. And as bad as SF is this year, they have some creampuffs left on thier schedule. So realistically, the Pats will be falling in the 5-10 pick range.

Secondly, Pioli and BB probably will NOT upset the balance of team chemistry and the salary cap to break the bank on some young pup.
Look for the Pats Brass to parley this pick to get additional picks, especially if they see talent available from pick 15-20.
And as always, they will take 'the best player on-the-board' regardless of percieved team needs.

This is usually a fun excercise, to predict the 'next Patriot', but I would be shocked if the Patriots actually exercised their claim to the overall 5-10 pick.

BTW...let's not forget that the Patriots may be looking for WR's next year. How about Crabtree from TexTech?? At 6-3 222lbs. and the kid has skills.

Daft???

Do you trust any of the Pats back ups to run this offense in an emergency? How many NFL starting QB's have gone down this year? How many go down EVERY year?
Remember the spearing Brady took in the Jacksonville game late last year?
We've been extremely fortunate.
I felt a hell of a lot more comfortable when Huard was here backing up Brady. I'm not sure Cassel or Gutierrez have the talent or the smarts to run our offense.

I'm surprised we don't have a better backup QB now that you mention it.
