Default Meriweather is going to be a stud

He is going to be a steal. I dont give a shat about the fact he made a mistake and beat the **** out of a fellow player in that brawl. He appologized for his actions, and admitted made a immature mistake. Same thing 90 percent of young men do at some point in there youth. He owns a handgun just like a ton of other people in this country. That is legal in the United States. Take a ride down south, everyone has guns. Girls, guys, young, old, you name it. The Miami dade police found NO crimes against Meriweather when they declared that gun situation self defense. It is perfectly legal to protect yourself with a registered handgun if the situation calls for it. Some poeple need to take up the right to bear arms with the us goverment. Not Meriweather owning a perfectly legal handgun. The whole pac man , henrey situation has everyone blowing things out of proportion. The fight was not even that big of a deal. Some want the kid banned from the nfl for making a mistake in a giant brawl where emotions, and "following the leader" got the best of him.

Kids going to be a great player. I hope we draft him : )

I'm willing to bet that 90% of men have not stomped on the head on an athletic opponent on the field at some point in their youth. What are the stakes?

Your 'everybody does it' defense raises more questions than answers.

I want tough-minded players who when presented with challenges can think for themselves based upon what they've been taught.

We'll see if the Pats braintrust has an opportunity to say whether they want to trust him.

I am offended by the 90% statment.I have known a tonne of people growing up and alot more as i am 30 and never met anyone stomping on another players head before.Me and my friends played alot of sports and have alot of broken bones but never stomped on thehead of any guy.

PFW's Nolan Nawrocki said it best below and captures my exact thoughts on Meriweather.

Draft Q&A

PFW's Nolan Nawrocki answers readers' questions about this year's draft
By Nolan Nawrocki
April 25, 2007

Hi guys,
Great draft coverage. One simple question — will the new player conduct policy really have any effect on this year's draft? It is very apparent your mock draft with Brandon Meriweather going No. 17 in the first round pays no attention to the projected rule violators. The guys making those decisions in less than a week are playing with real money. Lots of it.I'm not criticizing you guys. Just asking.
—Thanks, J. Wood

J.,
It’s not inconceivable that Meriweather slips out of the first round because teams have a difficult time pulling the trigger on a player who openly fired shots at an assailant in college and who stomped on a player during a melee against Florida International. I will say this — there are teams with a serious need for a safety who are scared to take him in the top 20. That said, he grades out as a top 20 talent as a football player. He has good football intelligence, he will hit, he has good cover ability and could move into the slot in nickel situations. He has a lot of value, and I think a confident decision-maker, such as Bill Belichick or Andy Reid, with a veteran football team to keep him in line, will roll the dice late in the back end of the first round, especially given that many teams do not think the concerns are as serious about his character as they are for others. He did, after all, fire in defense, and does not have any documented history with drugs. He takes the game seriously and studies it. He's a football junkie. His personal character may not be great, but his football character is, and many teams are more concerned with football character than personal character or citizenship, as teams have called it.

What a great distinction. This now goes into my ever-evolving equation of player value. "Personal Character" is a measure of risk, while "Football Character" is a predictor of success: film rat, the game is important to him, plays to the whistle, always in the weight room, etc. Both matter, but they factor in differently.

He made a mistake. He apologized for it. 90 percent of young men are not put in the situation of a bench clearing brawl, in which the entire team is fighting. It is not out of the ordinary for a young guy to make a really stupid mistake. The kid apologized and admitted what he did was wrong. He did not pull a Pac man and point out he was not convicted of a crime. He admitted what he did was very stupid and he learned from it. Instead of passing off the blame, he said he made a huge mistake, and apologized sincerely like a man. Everyone wants to act all high and mighty about it. The fact is the kid did something really stupid when he got caught up in huge fight. Not that big of a deal.

Chances are you would critasize Meriweather when he has done nothing like that, but have no problems when Brady actually knocks chicks up.
