Draftcountdown has him # 7 CB. Doesn't sound like a solid pick.

I have not seen Smith rated that high anywhere. However I really like him and would love to move up in the second to get him.
Don't forget that Mayo was rated as a low to mid second rounder this time last year. He then steadily moved up boards over 3 months. So, player rankings right now don't mean much.
Smith has intriguing size/agility combination for a CB and he offers flexibility to play safety as well. BB loves versatile players. #23 might be a bit high for him, but I'd consider him in the 2nd round. I'll have to do more research on Smith, his stock could rise even more if he has a great Combine.

Love Smith. Had him at #23 in my first mock. I think he will rise quickly and be a solid 1st round pick, somewhere in the mix with Vontae Davis and DJ Moore. I see his size and versatility being a big plus, as he could play FS next to Meriweather as well as CB.

Sorry, forgot to add ... I couldn't care less where nfldraftcountdown puts him right now. As was already noted, Mayo was a 2nd round pick on almost all boards this time last year. Plus, the Pats have never cared where others rank players, only who fits their needs and scheme and who they rank highly. Ty Warren was ranked #42 on nfldraftcountdown's final rankings in 2003 (and they had him correctly going to the Pats in the 1st round at the same time).
For those in love with rankings, nfldraftscout currently has Smith #34, well within 1st round range. He is the #5 ranked CB on their board (behind Malcolm Jenkins, DJ Moore, Vontae Davis, and Alphonso Smith) which seems more realistic.

I was kind of thinking the same thing, if Smith is taken in round 1 and another CB is taken with pick 57 (or maybe it is 58) then the Pats could take the best DT / O Line at 48. Day 2 could be used for a 3rd WR and additional depth.
It would certainly bolster the secondary, throw in a veteran Safety (Jones, Sanders, etc.) the secondary would be quite solid.
I am on the fence as far as a LB early, most of the very good pass rushers will go in the top 15 leaving only the second level guys. The Pats were basically without their top 4 OLBs last year (Thomas, Woods, Crable) and old man Vrabel was only at about 50% by the end of the year. Looking at it that way OLB is not a major need, like most positions it can be improved but the unit has decent depth.
He's 6'3", that is WAY TO TALL for BB's liking. It's a smurf with good hips or nothing..................
Will Moore's poor Senior Bowl week might drop him all the way into our laps at 23, he's the guy I want if we don't take a pass rusher. And who knows, crazier things have happened, how sweet would it be to have the "Little Animal" Vince Wilfork his way all the way down to us to put next to Mayo.......

Well, according to some on this board [note--I'm officially neutral], as sweet as antifreeze.
Seriously, though, as far as Sean Smith goes, don't forget the Pats were looking to trade up for Zackary Bowman, who was no smurf, either.
