As of January 5th, 2009, the Patriots own the 24th pick in the first round (which will be higher after next weekend), the 15th pick in the second round (Chargers), the 27th pick in the second round and the 26th pick in the third round. On top of that, I want to believe the Pats will get a 3rd round COMP pick for losing Asante Samuel in free agency.
Admittedly, I'm very excited about the number of possible selections in the first three rounds which is only tempered by the fact that Pioli is interviewing with KC and the front office may go through a possible transition when they would normally be preparing for the draft.
I can't say that all of the drafts under Pioli have been marvelous, but he has had some decent classes. Last years class looks as promising as the class that produced Cassell, Mankins and Hobbs, but not as great as the Eugene Wilson, Samuel, Koppen, Banta-Cain and Ty Warren draft class. 2002 wasn't that bad either. But what the heck happened in 2004, 2006, and 2007?

Well, 2007 was just no room at the inn + seeing much more upside in Welker and Moss and the 2008 draft than anybody they would be able to get in 2007 (after taking Meriweather, the Pats then traded away their next four picks, although they did apparently try to move up for patchick's binky Stewart Bradley).

The 2007 draft gave us a pro-bowler and a sure-fire HOF guy. What's wrong with Moss and Welker?
Just read on the bottom of the NFL network the Pioli just signed with KC. Man we have some work to do in the front office...good thing the man who has the last say in everything is still around (BB)

The pick ups in 2007 were great. Unfortunately, you can't say there was a Tully Banta-Cain or some other late round talent that could contribute to anything more than getting cut.

From the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be a discussion of Pioli & and other defectees' involvement in the Pats' draft preparations to date, and how that might affect things. Hate to see top decision-makers scatter at this time of year, potentially leaving the team short-handed and taking a lot of intelligence with them.

The draft board is pretty much put together by now except for
a little tweaking. What I worry about is the loss of experience
in negotiating contracts and salary cap management.
2007
Didn't we get Meriweather, Moss, Welker and 2008 2nd?
It was a 2008 1st (Jerod Mayo)
