Default Jarvis Green

Last seen sacking Peyton Manning in Indy, circa 2007.

I am looking at every roster spot with a critical eye. Green has been invisible this year and could be one of the reasons the 3rd down and red zone defense has been so awful. He plays all pash rushing downs but I have yet to see him near a QB, he is also the only natural 4-3 DE. He could become expendable next year with his 3.5 M cap hit.

he's been hurt, but that spot needs to be a prospect that can back the starters in all schemes.......the depth needs to be more effective stopping the run

I really like Oghobaase of Duke to come in as a 3-4 DE. I think that's what he was made to play...kind of reminds me of Aaron Smith. I don't know if he's coming out this year, but in either '09 or '10, he's the guy who can take over for Seymour or Green. Nice pass rushing skills, and you know he's no dummy.

I agree. The DL backups could all use an upgrade: a backup legit-sized NT, and a DE with pass-rushing skills to complement, and perhaps replace, the underperforming & overpaid Jarvis.

I know of a legit-sized NT in college. His name is Mount Cody and he is HUGE!!!! Over 400 pounds and can dunk a basketball. Until he got hurt, no team could run on him and once he is healed, no team will run on him. He can not be moved out of the middle even with two OL guys double teaming him. Talk about controlling a gap, he controls two gaps at once due to his size.

Since this draft is bereft of a killer pass rushing demon off the edge, I am all for drafting Mount Cody, if he comes out.

The question is whether Green is worth his $2.5M salary; total cap hit is not relevant. But your point is very well taken. Is Green worth $2.5M or not? His 2008 play would lead you to believe that he is not.

I would note that with Seymour likely looking for a contract again in the offseason, Green might be a good insurance policy for 2009. I guess the issue would be clearer if we extended Seymour, Wilfork and Wright. Absent that, it is a bit risky to cut Green.

Jarvis is going nowhere in 2009. Injuries have slowed him this year - I would have no problem seeing him extended when his contract runs out.

About what round do you think he projects? If Wilfork remains a Pat for the long haul, then there might not be a need to use a top-100 pick on a backup at a position of relative strength.
