We don't know how good or bad Mallett might be but apparently the coach thinks he has some value to the Pats.
I think the Pats should keep him.
It basically boils down to two possibilities:
1. The Patriots expect Brady WILL be their starting QB in 2015 and beyond.
In that case, keeping Mallett doesn't make a ton of sense, since there's no way, other than injury to Brady, that he'll be the starter, and his contract runs out in 2014.
2. The Patriots expect Brady WILL NOT be their starting QB in 2015 and beyond.
In that case, keeping Mallett makes a lot of sense, although they'll have to pay him more than vet minimum to keep him around.
Those who want to trade Mallett believe (1) is the case; those who want the Pats to hold on to Mallett likely favor (2).
