Default Today in guns - January 13-14, 2013

Since you depend on me for the link to the Kos feature, here it is:

Daily Kos: Another day in the (gun crazy) U.S.A.

Some quotes:

Quote:
Breckenridge, Mo. -- A 12-year-old is dead after accidentally shooting himself inside a home around 8:45 p.m. Friday. He was mishandling a gun when it went off.

Tuscaloosa, Ala. -- A 13-year-old boy died after he was accidentally shot at a hunting club late Saturday afternoon. A group of boys were putting away guns thought to be empty following a rabbit hunt. One gun went off hitting the boy.

Memphis, Tenn. -- A 20-year-old man was shot to death by his 28-year-old brother-in-law just before 1 p.m. Sunday.

Phoenix, Ariz. -- A 17-year-old male was shot to death after there was an argument outside an apartment complex around 11:15 p.m. Saturday. Two brothers of the victim have been arrested.

Iva, Mich. -- A 48-year-old woman was found dead in her bedroom Sunday night; shot in the head and chest. Her husband of three weeks has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
In won't bother with the Kos 2-day totals. Here are the 1/14 numbers:

Total shot, Jan. 14: 30
Total killed, Jan. 14: 13

Total loved ones/friends/etc. shot, Jan. 14: 5
Total loved ones/friends/etc. killed, Jan. 14: 4

Total defensive gun uses Jan. 14: 0

At age 24, Antonio Valines has been to prison three times – and was released each time.

That won’t happen again.

Valines, of North Avondale, was out on bond Nov. 16, 2011, when, a Hamilton County jury found, he shot and killed Dionte Armstead in a Mount Airy drug deal where he also robbed Armstead.
How did he get a gun? If it was stolen, why wasn't it locked up in the first place? If it was legally purchased, why not confiscated with his first arrest?

JournalGazette.net - Associated Press | The Journal Gazette | Fort Wayne, IN

Quote:
UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – A District of Columbia police officer embroiled in a paternity suit fatally shot his mistress before leaving their infant child to die in an overheated car, prosecutors said as the officer's murder trial opened Monday.
Do we think Officer Friendly acquired his gun intending to shoot his mistress? Or perhaps he bought the gun for "protection," and decided to protect himself against the feeling of being ticked off about a paternity suit...

Autopsy reveals Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher was *legally drunk when he shot Kassandra Perkins* - NY Daily News

Quote:
Former Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher was legally drunk when he shot his live-in girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, nine times and then himself in a murder-suicide on Dec. 1, according to autopsy reports released by the Jackson County medical examiner on Monday.
Did Belcher buy his Beretta intending to get drunk and shoot his girlfriend?

Woman killed at campsite near Marblemount - AP State - MyNorthwest.com

Quote:
MARBLEMOUNT, Wash. (AP) - A man called 911 about 2 a.m. Saturday and said he accidentally shot his girlfriend at their campsite on a trail near Marblemount.... The Skagit Valley Herald reports ( Man arrested after woman) the 31-year-old Rockport man was booked into the county jail at Mount Vernon for investigation of homicide.
And for fans of defensive gun uses...

Quote:
Roane County District Attorney General Russell Johnson said it appeared Vincent Brown acted in self-defense when he shot his 36-year-old son, Michael Brown...

Shouldn't somebody have a few hundred defensive gun uses for the same two day period, if there are really so many more defensive gun uses than garden variety shootings (and for that matter, murders of loved ones)?

Iono...I had one a few years ago in Richmond that I didn't even call into the police, let alone report to the media. We were being carjacked near VCU.

Whatever...I don't give a **** anymore.

This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

...And I believe you, based on conversations we've had here. There are others in here who are dyed-in-the-wool ideologues who are caught in lies all the time. I would not believe them.

Similarly, the self-report studies that come up with these enormous tallies for "defensive gun uses" have certain people around whom these defensive gun uses cluster. I believe one respondent was claiming 70+ defensive gun uses in the last year. Combine that with a small sample size, and you can get some very skewed ideas of how many defensive gun uses there are every year.

But since the NRA has succeeded in virtually forbidding real stats being gathered (it appears to have even penetrated the Bureau of Justice Statistics, which stopped gathering data on crimes by weapon used in 2006,) it's hard to get reliable non-anecdotal stats.

One thing you can do is look at how many stories there are -- especially to find out how many times guns are fired defensively. These incidents most assuredly do show up on the police blotter. I'm finding a few scattered incidents compared with the number of shootings in general.

You understand why there are no studies, the lobbyists for the gun manufacturers, the NRA, did not let that part of the budget to be funded... they eliminated the government from studying and publishing statistics on this.

Kind of like peek a boo, or object consistency, if you do not see it, it does not exist.

4.6 million folks hold the rest of the country hostage for their agenda..

This is ridiculous. Because Daily KOS lists or doesn't list something doesn't mean it happened or didn't happen. Most defensive gun uses go unreported - and most defensive gun uses don't involve shooting someone some they wouldn't be on this list to being with.

Daily KOS is just getting their information from the media, so if you spent even a few seconds thinking it over you would hopefully realize that the majority of them wouldn't be listed. And The ones that are reported in the media, are not on the list:

For instance, from Jan 8-Jan 11:

Man with infant shoots robber who held a gun to his head

Pharmacy clerk in California fatally shoots burglary suspect

15 Year old boy uses weapon of mass destruction with a 30 round automatic clip to shoot intruder

Man Shoots burglar with shotgun

Man shoots 2 suspects in home invasion

Store clerk stops cattle-prod wielding burglar with gun

Grandmother protects store from burglary with gun

I can't seem to find any of those shootings on your list. Oh well, I guess because DailyKos doesn't want to list them they never happened...
