Default Today in Guns - January 12, 2013

Mods: I've written about the quotidian quality of these threads, and how that should be considered unique content. If you decide to merge them, I am fine with that decision. But for now I'll continue to post our daily gun violence. The point of the thread is not "there is still gun violence." It is "look at what has happened in a single one-day (or rarely two-day) span."

Daily Kos: Another day in the (gun crazy) U.S.A.

A couple of choice nuggets:

Quote:
Calhoun County Miss. -- While at a cookout among five friends, a 51-year-old man shot and killed a 56-year-old man after getting into an argument that led to a shootout. The victim was struck six times below the waist with bullets from a .22 caliber rifle.
Quote:
Plainfield, N.J. -- A 5-year-old boy walking with his mother was hit in the face by a stray bullet about 4 p.m. Thursday. He was in critical but stable condition.

Boston, Mass. -- A 13-year-old boy walking to church was shot once in the stomach about 7 p.m. last night. He is in critical condition.
Total people shot in this non-comprehensive roundup: 31
Total gun killings: 17
Total defensive uses: 0, although one unarmed man was shot while surprising burglars

A couple more from around the Web...

Police say Ala. pastor killed wife, wounded his daughter | TuscaloosaNews.com

If you've ever defended guns by saying "hey you'd just stab 'em..." this is your story.

Quote:
GARDENDALE | A prominent Alabama pastor fatally shot his wife and wounded their 18-year-old daughter in their church-owned home before grabbing a kitchen knife and trying to stab himself to death, police said Friday....
Quote:
After Greer opened fire on his wife and daughter Thursday, the teenager grabbed the gun and ran to a neighbor’s house to alert authorities, police said.

The minister then grabbed a kitchen knife and went to a bathroom, where he repeatedly stabbed himself in his chest and neck, police said.
Do we think Pastor Greer bought his gun planning to shoot his wife to death, or for "self defense?"

Do we think Pastor Greer, had he been able to keep his weapon, would have had a better chance of killing himself, versus his feckless stabbing attempts?

1 Arrested, Accused Of Shooting His Younger Brother 2 Times | NBC 4i

Quote:
Detectives say the victim's brother, 35-year-old Nathaniel Copeland, is the suspected shooter. The investigation indicates the two brothers were having an argument, when Nathaniel, pulled out a gun and allegedly shot Maurice.

Nathaniel has been arrested and charged with felonious assault.
I wonder if Nathaniel bought his gun intending to shoot his brother? Or maybe he "exercised his right" to "protect himself..." and then decided that he'd shoot his brother with it instead.

Man charged with shooting brother | News - Home

(posted 11:56 pm on the 11th, still w/in the last 24, and it goes well with the family theme...)

DICKENSON COUNTY, Va. -
A Dickenson County, Virginia man was charged with aggravated malicious wounding after authorities say he shot his brother.

Deputies: Owasso Man Dead After Wife Shoots Him Multiple Times - News9.com - Oklahoma City, OK - News, Weather, Video and Sports |

Quote:
OWASSO, Oklahoma - An Owasso woman is in the Tulsa County Jail on a first-degree murder complaint after telling deputies she shot her husband when he charged her with a knife and tried to kill her.
According to an arrest report, Vickie McNeely called 911 about 9 p.m. on Friday and told the dispatcher she shot her husband in the laundry room....
Two kitchen knives were found next to his body. The wife met the cops with alcohol on her breath. The wife's lawyered up and is refusing to speak to police further, and is being held without bond.

Quote:
After a dispute inside their Greensboro home on Monday, North Carolina woman, Sandra Palmer, 47, shot her two children and their father before killing herself, Police Chief Ken Miller said last Tuesday during a press conference.
The family that slays together stays together, I suppose.

I have found that when an idividual constantly shoves a political topic down your throat...that over time it becomes detrimental to the individuals cause

With the truth of the matter being considered "shoving a viewpoint down your throat," I suppose the best thing you can do is ignore the truth.

It would be a pity, however, unless you're a no-questions-asked gun fan to begin with.

So, ignore the threads if you like. Everybody has that choice. They don't if I don't post them.

And most of them support common-sense gun control measures.

Ohhhhhh your problem is how many laws there are? I can cure everything that ails ya. You want to replace them all with one Federal law?

Hell, you can just replace them with 4 words: thou shalt not kill.

But regurgitating a rando number -- or did you count all "20,000"? -- is only so convincing, when the laws we have vary not only by state but by locality.

As they stand, they're "20,000" shades of inadequate, as our daily slaughter illustrates.
