Kos roundup published 1/8/13 (won't bother with 1/7 for this batch.)
My count of incidents on the Daily Kos site is 20 "rounded up" today that resulted in deaths; in other cases people are in conditions that may lead to death. To clarify what this means, I'll use a line on this illustrative quote:
Quote:
Ocala, Fla. -- A 20-year-old woman who shot and killed her 6-month-old son on January 4, 2013 before turning the gun on herself has died today after being removed from life support.
Shootings included both street crimes and crimes against acquaintances and loved ones. I'll use another line or two to illustrate the "shooting loved ones" phenomenon:
Quote:
Nashville, Tenn. -- A shooting at a family get-together on Sunday killed a 23-year-old man and left his 55-year-old mother in critical condition. Police have arrested the boyfriend of the victim’s sister.
In four cases accounting for six shootings, shooter and victim(s) are said to know or be related to each other. They also accounted for four deaths. For a number of other cases, there may or may not be such a tie... for example, someone who shoots two people dead and is found with a self-inflicted fatal wound doesn't necessarily know them.
Doing the homework for the gun zealots: In one case, a man shot two people who broke into his home. In another case, both the homeowner and a home invader shot each other (but neither is known to be dead at this writing.) A total of 40 people had bullets go into them in these stories (not sure about #41, in which someone shot into a car and someone was "slightly injured," but the gunshot wound itself is not mentioned.)
Just after 12:30 p.m. Monday, police were called to the scene on the 6000 block of S. Owasso near 61st and Peoria where they found four women shot to death.
Four teens were wounded at a birthday party for a 14-year-old girl early Sunday, according to Chattanooga police.
"We were having a party, and things just got out of hand," said a young man who answered the door at 3208 Bon Air Circle where the party was held. He appeared to be in his late teens.
ETTRICK, VA—The man involved in a Dinwiddie shooting that left his father dead Monday night is now facing charges in a separate incident. Police say he may have killed his ex-girlfriend and her mother in their home the same night.
HELENA - The double-murder trial of Michelle Gable, accused of killing her estranged husband Joseph and Sunday Bennett in 2011, began on Monday and is expected to last two weeks....During opening arguments the prosecution told jurors that Gable purposely emptied 17 rounds of bullets from two handguns.
Defense attorney Randi Hood said that Gable had entered into the apartment with her own key, and only shot her husband after he pistol-whipped her.

Former U.S. Rep. Giffords and husband launch gun control lobbying effort
Tuesday January 8, 2013
Associated Press
PHOENIX (AP) -- Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband launched a political action committee aimed at curbing gun violence on Tuesday, the second anniversary of the Tucson shooting that killed six people and left her critically injured.
Giffords and Mark Kelly wrote in an op-ed published in USA Today that their Americans for Responsible Solutions initiative would help raise money to support greater gun control efforts.
"Achieving reforms to reduce gun violence and prevent mass shootings will mean matching gun lobbyists in their reach and resources," they wrote in the column.
They said that it will "raise funds necessary to balance the influence of the gun lobby."

Tucson residents held events over the weekend to mark the anniversary of the Saturday morning when Loughner opened fire with a pistol with a 30-round magazine that he emptied in just 40 seconds.
I saw them interviewed yesterday... apparently they're both gun owners, too. They're making the point that we need mo better gun control -- and that's where America is too. Not many people are like me or like the denial-machine gun nuts here either. Most people just want common-sense gun laws that makes it harder to mow down crowds, to start with.
St. Paul, Minn. -- A 34-year-old man shot his 32-year-old wife in the head with a handgun, then dismembered her body and stored it at a garage in White Bear Lake, Minn. The woman told the man Sunday that she was leaving him and taking their toddler-aged son.
Quote:
Dayton, Texas -- A 2-year-old who gained access to a loaded gun was in guarded condition after accidentally being shot in the chest. A family was eating dinner at their home around 8 p.m. Tuesday when the toddler went into a bedroom and found a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun. The gun discharged and a bullet struck the child in the chest.
Total loved ones/friends/family members of gun owners shot w/family guns: 17
Total loved ones/etc. killed: 6
(four or five of them accidents, as per the above.)
Total defensive gun uses: 0
Total people shot: 41
Total people killed: 15 (more may die later of their wounds, of course.)
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Police said an altercation over a woman led to a shooting on Tuesday night.
Police said an ex-boyfriend of a woman went to the home of her current boyfriend on Monticello Street around 10:30 p.m. The men got into a verbal and physical altercation before the ex-boyfriend shot the current boyfriend twice.
Preliminary autopsy results reveal that the victim of Monday's fatal shooting at a Rapid City motel died of a single gunshot wound to the chest....
Police believe this was an isolated incident, and that Marrufo and the shooter were acquaintances.
A man charged with gunning down three people and wounding two others in an April shooting spree in Tulsa has pleaded not guilty.
A judge entered the not guilty plea Wednesday on behalf of Jake England, who's charged with three counts of first-degree murder and two counts of shooting with intent to kill.
An off-duty corrections officer shot his girlfriend's ex after a dispute in East Flatbush yesterday. A witness told the Post that 34-year-old Kai Gates was shot by 31-year-old Dale Moore after Gates cut Moore off in traffic and Moore "tapped" Gates's Cadillac SUV with his Mercedes... . Moore then shot Gates twice, as Shalonda Smith, who was riding with Moore, ran to Gates's aid.
Do they post "today in booze" where they link all the deaths caused by liquored up fools? Nevermind.

"The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him." Leo Tolstoy, 1897
