Default Today in Guns - (MERGED)

Here are a few of today's/yesterday's events in guns, 1/7-8/13:

It looks like a lot of this work will be collected daily in the Daily Kos - here's a link to their daily roundup page:
Daily Kos: Another day in the (gun crazy) U.S.A.

Kos roundup published 1/8/13 (won't bother with 1/7 for this batch.)

My count of incidents on the Daily Kos site is 20 "rounded up" today that resulted in deaths; in other cases people are in conditions that may lead to death. To clarify what this means, I'll use a line on this illustrative quote:

Quote:
Ocala, Fla. -- A 20-year-old woman who shot and killed her 6-month-old son on January 4, 2013 before turning the gun on herself has died today after being removed from life support.
Shootings included both street crimes and crimes against acquaintances and loved ones. I'll use another line or two to illustrate the "shooting loved ones" phenomenon:

Quote:
Nashville, Tenn. -- A shooting at a family get-together on Sunday killed a 23-year-old man and left his 55-year-old mother in critical condition. Police have arrested the boyfriend of the victim’s sister.
In four cases accounting for six shootings, shooter and victim(s) are said to know or be related to each other. They also accounted for four deaths. For a number of other cases, there may or may not be such a tie... for example, someone who shoots two people dead and is found with a self-inflicted fatal wound doesn't necessarily know them.

Doing the homework for the gun zealots: In one case, a man shot two people who broke into his home. In another case, both the homeowner and a home invader shot each other (but neither is known to be dead at this writing.) A total of 40 people had bullets go into them in these stories (not sure about #41, in which someone shot into a car and someone was "slightly injured," but the gunshot wound itself is not mentioned.)

Moving on to a few site-by-site stories:

Quote:
HELENA - The double-murder trial of Michelle Gable, accused of killing her estranged husband Joseph and Sunday Bennett in 2011, began on Monday and is expected to last two weeks....During opening arguments the prosecution told jurors that Gable purposely emptied 17 rounds of bullets from two handguns.

Will a discussion of how much a person would rather be shot by an assault rifle than a shotgun ensue????

And the Aurora trial starts.... you won't find that on Drudge.

Former U.S. Rep. Giffords and husband launch gun control lobbying effort
Tuesday January 8, 2013
Associated Press

PHOENIX (AP) -- Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and her husband launched a political action committee aimed at curbing gun violence on Tuesday, the second anniversary of the Tucson shooting that killed six people and left her critically injured.

Giffords and Mark Kelly wrote in an op-ed published in USA Today that their Americans for Responsible Solutions initiative would help raise money to support greater gun control efforts.

"Achieving reforms to reduce gun violence and prevent mass shootings will mean matching gun lobbyists in their reach and resources," they wrote in the column.

They said that it will "raise funds necessary to balance the influence of the gun lobby."

----------------------------

Tucson residents held events over the weekend to mark the anniversary of the Saturday morning when Loughner opened fire with a pistol with a 30-round magazine that he emptied in just 40 seconds.

I saw them interviewed yesterday... apparently they're both gun owners, too. They're making the point that we need mo better gun control -- and that's where America is too. Not many people are like me or like the denial-machine gun nuts here either. Most people just want common-sense gun laws that makes it harder to mow down crowds, to start with.

Quote:
Dayton, Texas -- A 2-year-old who gained access to a loaded gun was in guarded condition after accidentally being shot in the chest.
