Death of India rape victim stirs anger, promises of action
In our own country, prior to the feminist movement of the 1970s, it was not uncommon for a judge to acquit someone of rape because the woman dressed provocatively, for husbands to legally rape their wives, and for sex crimes to cause so much shame for the victim that the victim and her (his) family kept it secret. Of course, back in the 1970s, you had the American right wing actively disparaging the women's movement. They often still do. Susan Faludi wrote a terrific book, Backlash, that provides ample documentation of that. At any rate, it's hopeful to see what is going on India in response to the abuse of women. All around the world, we see men slowing losing their special privileges and conservative social beliefs dying a well deserved death. The world has a long way to go, but the progress is encouraging.
(Reuters) - A woman whose gang rape provoked protests and rare national debate about violence against women in India died from her injuries on Saturday, prompting promises of action from a government that has struggled to respond to public outrage.
The unidentified 23-year-old medical student suffered a brain injury and massive internal damage in the attack on December 16 and died in hospital in Singapore where she had been taken for treatment.
Protesters rallied peacefully in the capital New Delhi and other cities across India to keep the pressure on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's government to get tougher on crimes against women. That was in contrast to the pitched battles protesters fought with police last weekend.

Never miss a chance to score political points, eh? Anyway, this line smells like bull****. Have sources on this? I'll gladly apologize if I'm wrong.
In any event, I'm hoping this is a watershed moment in India, but there is a lot of cultural inertia there, and the country is not all that tightly connected culturally, socially, etc.
------------------ “On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson..they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sacks last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

This is actually the story I was thinking about, but when it came out there was a lot in the media about how rape is prosecuted. This was a particularly egregious example, but there were certainly other examples of young women, prostitutes, and others not getting justice for violent crimes committed against them.

What a bunch of savage primitives in these 3rd world countries. All the more reason our borders need to be sealed, and our immigration process organized, controlled, and regulated.
What the F is wrong with people on this planet? I read some of these stories from these god forsaken places, and can't fathom how people can think and act this way in the 21st century. That poor girl. Those animals who did this should be eliminated asap.

"The most difficult subjects can be explained to the most slow-witted man if he has not formed any idea of them already; but the simplest thing cannot be made clear to the most intelligent man if he is firmly persuaded that he knows already, without a shadow of doubt, what is laid before him." Nkolai, not only did it happen then - it still happens now.

In July, a jury found Robb Gary Evans, a 43-year-old Department of Public Safety officer, guilty of felony sexual abuse for walking up behind a woman in a bar, putting his hand up her skirt, and fondling her. Coconino County Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Hatch sentenced him to two years' probation, community service and treatment, reports the Arizona Daily Sun. After his conviction, the DPS fired him.
But Hatch also had some words for the victim. "If you wouldn't have been there that night, none of this would have happened to you," the Sun reported the judge as saying. Hatch went on to urge all women to be vigilant. Even going to the grocery store after 10 p.m., the judge said, could put a woman at risk.
If you really want to really get mad, look at the details of her injuries.
Vomit inducing.

The Patriots have been overachievers the past two years. It doesn't have the talent to compensate for injuries, and it wins so much because it puts in 99% effort in the regular season and plays with terrific schemes to mask its deficiencies.
But in the playoffs a good team at 99% will not beat emotional, talented teams that play at 100%. It's what happened against the Giants in 2011 and the Ravens in 2012.
Women in Iowa beware: If your boss thinks you’re really really ridiculously good looking, he can fire you. And it’s perfectly legal. The all-male Iowa Supreme Court refused to reinstate a lawsuit Friday, noting that a dentist didn’t break the law when he fired an employee who had worked for him for 10 years because he and his wife saw her as a threat to their marriage, reports the Associated Press. Melissa Nelson, the 32-year-old dental assistant was by all accounts a stellar employee. But her boss, James Knight, complained of her tight clothing, “once telling her that if his pants were bulging that was a sign her clothes were too revealing.”
In a unanimous ruling, the justices ruled that having an “irresistible attraction” is enough of a justification enough to fire someone. It doesn’t matter if the person has not engaged in any kind of inappropriate or even flirtatious behavior and wouldn’t consider touching her employer with a 10-foot pole.
That RC Country Italy is a tad weird also..
Quote:
An Italian priest has provoked outrage after claiming that women are to blame for domestic violence by wearing tight clothing in his Christmas bulletin - and pinning the notice to the door his church.
Father Piero Corsi also attacked women for not cleaning their houses and serving fast food, and called on women to engage in 'healthy self criticism' over femicide - men murdering women.
In an astonishing message, he attacked pornography but said women shared the blame for 'provoking the worst instincts which then turn into violence and sexual abuse'.
Wow. That excerpt started me thinking of this last election. A few politicians destroyed their chances of winning with remarks regarding rape or female reproduction. Those comments were so outrageous, it would not be a stretch to think they might think along these lines. At the very least, it gives credibility that we still have a lot of ignorance here in the United States.

As a woman I am always surprised when people (men, mostly) are surprised to find this kind of thinking still exists. It's been a fact of life for me since I was old enough to understand there was a difference between men and women. It was bad, it got better, it's getting bad again.
I spent several years in the 80s working a rape hotline and then being a rape victim advocate - we stayed with a victim from hospital to court verdict - the stories I could tell would shock some people, I suppose, but many women would just take them for granted as "how it is."
One only has to listen to Rush to realize how prevalent a certain "blaming" attitude still is.
Catholic priests are joining the fray:
Quote:
A Catholic priest in Italy has created a firestorm by claiming that women bring violence on themselves by serving cold food and dressing provocatively.
Father Piero Corsi of Liguria sparked outrage after members of his congregation posted his Christmas bulletin onto Facebook. The flyer, entitled “Women and femicide – healthy self-criticism. How often do they provoke?” said victims of domestic and sexual violence should question if they were themselves to blame for the incident.
The flyer said women “provoke the worst instincts” and “should search their consciences and ask: did we bring this on ourselves?”
