Default Charles Whitman - If it Happened Today

If this happened today ... what would we be blaming or would his case make a bit more sense from the man just snapped point of view - total irrational behavior.

Father was abusive - parents demanded exceptional everything from Charles - he had an IQ of 172.

too much to copy and paste ... one really has to read the entire entry.

Charles Whitman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
Charles Joseph Whitman (June 24, 1941 – August 1, 1966) was an engineering student and former Marine who killed 13 people and wounded 32 others in a shooting rampage located in and around the Tower of the University of Texas in Austin on the afternoon of August 1, 1966. Three persons were killed inside the university's tower, with 11 others murdered after Whitman fired at random targets from the 28th-floor observation deck of the Main Building. Whitman was shot and killed by Austin Police Officer, Houston McCoy.[1][2][3][4][5]

Prior to starting the shootings at the University of Texas, Whitman had murdered both his wife and mother in Austin.
Quote:
Whitman acquired a reputation as a practical joker in his years as an engineering student. But, friends also noted some morbid or chilling statements. On one occasion in 1962, as he and a fellow student named Francis Schuck, Jr. browsed in the bookstore at the Main Building of the University of Texas, Whitman remarked: "A person could stand off an army from atop of it (the tower) before they got him."[23]
Quote:
At 6:45, Whitman began typing his suicide note, a portion of which read:
"I do not quite understand what it is that compels me to type this letter. Perhaps it is to leave some vague reason for the actions I have recently performed. I do not really understand myself these days. I am supposed to be an average reasonable and intelligent young man. However, lately (I cannot recall when it started) I have been a victim of many unusual and irrational thoughts."[36]
Quote:
Just after midnight on August 1, Whitman drove to his mother's apartment at 1212 Guadalupe Street. After killing his mother, he placed her body on her bed and covered it with sheets.[37] His method is disputed, but officials believed he rendered her unconscious before stabbing her in the heart.
He left a handwritten note beside her body, which read in part:
"To Whom It May Concern: I have just taken my mother's life. I am very upset over having done it. However, I feel that if there is a heaven she is definitely there now [...] I am truly sorry [...] Let there be no doubt in your mind that I loved this woman with all my heart."[38]
Quote:
Whitman returned to his home at 906 Jewell Street. He stabbed his wife three times in the heart as she slept, killing her instantly. He covered her body with sheets. He resumed the typewritten note he had begun the previous evening. Using a ballpoint pen, he wrote at the side of the page:
"Friends interrupted. 8-1-66 Mon. 3:00 A.M. BOTH DEAD."[37] Whitman continued the note, finishing it by pen:
"I imagine it appears that I brutally killed both of my loved ones. I was only trying to do a quick thorough job [...] If my life insurance policy is valid please pay off my debts [...] donate the rest anonymously to a mental health foundation. Maybe research can prevent further tragedies of this type."[36]

I remember it well, it was the first incident of that magnitude that comes to memory..

Not sure how long it lasted, but it did not go right away.. at that time there was only news twice a day.. morning paper and evening newscast.. there was no talk radio..no five minute cycling. Things were different..

The good old days when the news did not put out wrong information every 10 minutes and so confuse and muddle what really happened so that it took weeks to get to the real story.

And now-a-days not only do they put out misinformation but depending on the network it is also politically motivated, sad.

Not that you're necessarily wrong on that last part... But, can you cite an example? ...

Posting a picture of Adam Lanza's brother and claiming he was the shooter immediately after the shooting.....

My heart is no longer heavy over the Newtown incident. I don't think it's wise to allow such tragedies to bring us down for long periods...at least that's what I believe.

So I'm not walking/sitting around trying to figure anything out any longer.

It wouldn't be as widely covered as 20 first graders being systematically slaughtered. Which brings me to something i wanted to post last week. IMO ALL media is culpable, it back backhandedly glorifies these tragedies. If you want to be famous or infamous all you have to do is kill enough people and your name will be plastered all over tv, the net, radio, newspapers, and magazines. Last sat. i went to CNN and read a headline "Horrific new details" ''read more",this was a tragedy, its not reality TV, twenty kids weren't slaughtered for our entertainment, or to make money. These are copy cat crimes, people just don't come up with the idea of killing dozens of people all on their own. Maybe once like whitman, but after that its just to common for individuals to come up with the same thing repeatedly. I remember in the early sixties someone hijacked a plane to Cuba, it was a big story on the nightly news. A few weeks or months later someone else did the same thing, pretty soon it was a common occurance until Cuba started sending the hijackers back to the US.Like those hijackings these shootings need to down played, by that i mean the constant minute to minute coverage sensationalizing a crime.

What is your definition of "misinformation" then?

Seems more like an over-eager mistake than purposeful deceit.

Misinformation are mistakes made without ensuring that the facts are correct. When you post a picture and name a person who you accuse of murdering 27 people, you have an obligation to be correct before you report it or don't report it....
Misinformation is also when press has an agenda, like NBC doctoring car crashes, Duke Lacrosse case or Richard Jewell the wrongfully accused Olympic bomber.
