Please, instruct those poor parents on your methods for "ignoring" The Westboro Baptist Church protesters.

Yes, ignore them. The Supreme Court decision stipulates that they must be 100 feet away from the funeral but in the case of the soldier protests, they were 1000 feet away which is almost 2/10 of a mile away.

I missed Obama's political message. What was it?

They physically threaten people by getting in their faces using physical intimidation to coerce society to push their political agenda. Their presence at these funerals is a source of intimidation. If you can't see that I'm sad for you.

I give up trying to talk to you about this since obviously you're not willing to go against any church group even one as vile as this which has been kicked out of any Baptist affiliation. So I'll leave you with their view on the Catholics for your enjoyment.

Westboro Baptist Church - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Catholicism

Westboro Baptist refers to Catholic priests as "vampires" and "Draculas" and talks of Catholic priests sucking semen out of male children's genitals like vampires suck blood from their victims. In addition, WBC calls Pope Benedict XVI such epithets as "The Godfather of Pedophiles" and "Pervert Pope". In April 2008 the WBC protested Pope Benedict XVI during a papal visit in New York City.

The WBC launched a website called Priests Rape Boys in which they criticize the Roman Catholic Church because of the Catholic sex abuse scandal, saying, "Every time any person gives any amount of money to the Catholic Church, that person is paying the salary of pedophile rapists."[72]

The WBC describes the Roman Catholic Church as "the largest, most well-funded and organized pedophile group in the history of man"[73] and goes on to say that, "There are over 1 billion Catholics in the world—that's one out of every six people alive today—and every single one of them will split Hell wide open when they die—period. And there is nothing they can do about it."[72]

The WBC also criticizes Catholicism, as it does Eastern Orthodoxy, for venerating the Virgin Mary, the Saints, relics, and icons; they accuse the Catholic Church of committing idolatry.

"Getting in someone's face" isn't even a crime nevermind an act of violence. If anything, the acts of violence are directed towards WBC.

The Supreme Court has said that WBC's presence at the funerals is their right. How is their presence a threat? What are they threatening to do? Being a jerk isn't the same as being a threat.

It's obvious that you're looking for any possible way to disparage them (even falsely) out of hate. If that's what you want, then IMO WBC has won and hate has begotten more hate. It's obvious they aren't terrorists and it's obvious that they're jerks.

I'm not for or against a "religious" group. I'm advocating for free speech. I have made it clear that I would even support a Progressive's right to free speech so this has nothing to do with my religious beliefs.

As for WBC's religious beliefs.....did you honestly think I didn't know where they stood on Catholicism?

I don't like WBC. I think these people are saying horrible things and they will pay for them when they stand before God. But as an American, I believe that they have the right to speak freely even though I find what they say disgusting, vulgar, and contrary to God's will.

What do you call them? Is your church and their church just six of one and a half dozen of the other?

I think I made clear what I thought of WBC's "message" in earlier posts.

sounded kind of like an ad hominem attack. Are they on equal footing with your church? Define them please.

Unfortunately I agree with you ... we can't pick and choose based on taste what free speech should be. Would be nice if they understood how that should be exercised ... but then again that's what they do. I believe in free speech and it would make me a hypocrite to say they can't have it. Free speech - even distasteful free speech keeps our country free.

It's quite impossible for most people to even rationalize their point of view - I can't do it myself. Then again their are timid IMO compared to the people who cut off the heads of others, kill family members and stone women to death all in the name of religion.

I'm pretty sure that I'm talking about their message (in a very limited manner) so I don't see why you would consider it an ad hominem attack.

Besides, my posts in this thread weren't related to the nature or doctrine of WBC but rather their right to free speech.

I'm not sure what you mean by "equal footing". Are you asking if the belief system of WBC and the Catholic church are the same? Well, I think you can look at this thread and see Westboro's response to Roman Catholicism. It's quite obvious that Roman Catholicism and WBC share little in common.
