Yeah, I've been to restaurants and watched a table full of 20 somethings all looking at their phones. Why the fugg even go out? They could just pretend.

Same goes for airports where the disease seems to infiltrated older generations. Sure, they'll all say they're reading their emails. But how did they do it 10 years ago pre-cell phone/email capability?

When I travel, I mostly shut my cell phone off. I look at travel as a chance to get some peace & quiet. I'm on the darn phone & email all day at my office.

I often yearn for the old days...whether they were the "good old days" or not.

There are about 500 parents in a Connecticut suburb tonight who probably feel a bit different about the importance of a cell phone than you do.

If you are responsible for the care of someone, a cell phone is highly important.

It would be nice if the topic of the thread stayed on

the story and the victims ... out of respect for everyone involved.

There will be plenty of time to discuss the side issues of gun control etc...

I've read the POS used an AR-15 rifle.

I think it's time to ban assualt rifles. I'm all for the second amendment, and see nothing wrong with law abiding citizens owning a certain number of hand guns and hunting rifles and shotguns. But there is no use for an assualt rifle other than to kill other humans.

Nail on the head!
At the very least, have automatic weapons heavily locked at firing ranges where an individual can target shoot "only" at that facility. So, the question is: how many children will die to we ban automatic weapons?

Schools are a gun-free zone for a reason. Guns should never, ever, be allowed in schools. A ban on automatic weapons would curtail some of the violence in society. The only excuse that I have heard is that people enjoy using them at the firing range, and it's their right. I think a little sacrafice (auto-guns) is in order.

I'm going to start a weapons thread ...

Because we should not be arguing
in this thread out of respect for the victims.

Can this thread please stay topic specific to the story of this tragedy.

President Obama earlier today ordered flags flown at half staff at all federal and military buildings and installations. Of those thousands of flags, perhaps none flew as mournfully as this one in the town center of Newtown, Conn., hours after 18 children were killed in school shooting. (Kyle Lyddy)

Adam Lanza woke up this morning ...

Shot his mother in the face killing her ...

Then took the guns and her car to the school and killed some more.

He did not kill his father ......

Pre 9/11, many schools banned students from even having a cell phone on premises. Now they realize how important it is ("Mom I missed the bus" ) or for events like today ("Mom/Dad I'm okay") and just make the kids turn it off during the school day.......
