But you're right, it's the GOP that's back in civil war right now.

The blue dogs served a very useful purpose IMO in that they offered some middle ground on economic issues. The democratic party was not very fond of them in recent years ...
They had 54 members in 2008 now they are down to 20 or so ...
Fewer moderates in Congress make deals difficult
Quote:
WASHINGTON — When the next Congress cranks up in January, there will be more women, many new faces and 11 fewer tea party-backed House Republicans from the class of 2010 who sought a second term.
Overriding those changes, though, is a thinning of pragmatic, centrist veterans in both parties. Among those leaving are some of the Senate’s most pragmatic lawmakers, nearly half the House’s centrist Blue Dog Democrats and several moderate House Republicans.

Congress is sadly trending away from moderation ... America is failing in our election of these people. We need to stop electing far left and far right candidates who get elected based on human emotion. If we had a larger centrist group Congress would pass bills based on topic and content instead of on re-election chances.
Just my opinion ... not that I expect it to change soon.
