Moms Talk: Schools Ban Charlie Brown, Santa and Poinsettias
First, schools banned Halloween. Now a class outing to see a church performance of "A Charlie Brown Christmas" could be nixed as well. Have schools taken things too far when it comes to 'anti-Christmas' activities?
RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA -- “A Charlie Brown Christmas” has been a holiday TV classic for years. So when students at Terry Elementary School in Little Rock, Ark., were invited on a class field trip to see a performance of the show this December, they were excited. But their excitement was quickly quenched when a parent complained; an atheist group got wind of the outing and called it a “violation of religious freedom” because it contains some religious content and will be performed at a church.
The list goes on. In Stockton, the school district warned teachers not to put up any poinsettias, Christmas trees or other decorations that would be considered festive, just to make sure they did not offend anyone. And in Fort Worth, Texas, Santa was banned from classrooms because his visit was considered “endorsing religious activity.” The ban was later overturned and the schools agreed Santa could come to the schools but not enter the classrooms.

In RI we have had a two year controversy over our Christmas/Holiday Tree in the State House rotunda... so much so it has even garnered the attention of Bill O'Reilly who got a smackdown the other night.
The reality is that there are arguments on both sides of the issue, and I for one do not care.. it does provide fodder for the talk shows though and the news outlets... The roving reporter wants to know, what do you think??

do gooders sticking their noses into traditions as benign as festive decorating and Santa at Christmas under the guise that it indoctrinates is paranoid and arrogant......"warned teachers"...warned??? Why are these people so concerned over possibly offending an extreme minority while they ignore the vast majority who are offended with their intolerance?
whether you call a tree a Christmas tree or a Holiday tree is one thing, but banning them all together under any name is a whole new level

There are concerns about the source, "The Patch", which is a locally edited newspaper... none of the sources are cited...
There seems to be a tendency towards hyperbole, kids are taught about Ramadan and Kwanza??? Some of these battles take place in people's minds, the comparison to Black Friday makes no sense.. even though she qualifies it as being facetious..
Without regard, I celebrate Christmas my way and do not really care how others celebrate theirs...

I think we have to keep things in check, and I think that if a parent doesn't want her child exposed to religious propaganda, it's a conversation worth having. I suppose religion is like pornography, in a sense, that it's really defined by community standards. In the example of Charlie Brown Christmas, the school handled it appropriately by saying that "any child who wished not to go could be exempt from attending." Personally, I think any parent who would object to such an outing is as ridiculous as the parent who thinks that Creationism should be taught in public school. But, these are conversations worth having because there are some valid issues involved.

My culture's not Christianity. I don't hate anybody's culture, blah blah blah, I just don't need the state promoting it.
As far as "hating our constitution" you should really think a little more before you post. Our constitution was very clear on banning the establishment of a state religion, and the Founders' other documents were very clear on the intent: separation between church and state.
This annual bullcrap-fest never was worth the time, and I'm not going to waste it this morning. Maybe later, if I'm bored.
Just indoctrinate your young in your church like God intended, why dontcha.
Absolutely - the secular can just enjoy the foods, non-religious traditions, etc., at home or in non-state spaces... the religious can enjoy the season in church... the malls and stores and whatnot can continue to sell us whatever they can with displays of festive ribbons and ornaments, etc.
Just keep Christmas religious, commercial, etc. Just keep it out of the schools and off the courthouse steps and I'm happy.

I gave up on Organized Religion 70 years ago, the only time I will step foot in a church is for a wedding or a funeral.
Liberal Left Wing Haters that want to get rid of Xmas and Santa should ignore Xmas, they should keep their mouths shut and go sking that should get them away from all of that "Jesus Shlt"
