Default Census - More People Identify As Mixed Race

Column is a few months old but interesting and the graphic is even more interesting

... our changing country perhaps changing faster than many realize.

I would have expected a bit more shading on the east coast
... not as drastic east coast vs west coast as the map shows.
Census: More people identify as mixed race – In America - CNN.com Blogs

Quote:
The 2010 census provided the first glimpse of trends in multirace reporting since it was the second time such an option was available. And what it shows is that people who say they are a mix of races grew by a larger percentage than people who reported a single race, according to the data released Thursday.

People who reported a background of mixed race grew by 32% to 9 million between 2000 and 2010. In comparison, single-race population increased 9.2%. In all, the U.S. population increased by 9.7% since 2000. Many multiple-race groups increased by 50% or more.

But that does not necessarily mean there are many more children of interracial couples.

It's inevitable that races will mix. Many are more attracted to other races than their own.

Does it matter? Not really...at least not to me.

If we all looked alike, we'd find something else to differentiate ourselves. Must be wierd to live in Japan or China where everyone kinda looks the same.

Politically i think it means a lot ... we just witnessed change at this election ... every 2 years now the impact will grow as more become eligible to vote. Replacing the older people passing on who used to pull the master lever LOL.

Republicans and Democrats will have a 3rd party at some point due to the changing demographics. What would happen say if a Hispanic party popped up ... interesting thought. Democrats and Republicans are already hard at work bringing races and mixed race issues into the platforms ... more democrats than republicans so far for sure.

What matters in the opinions of voters will change, economics will change ... lots and lots of change fueled by millions of people carrying around hand held computers / smart phones and communicating with each other.

With the global society we have now, in the (not too distant?) future race will cease to be an issue.

There will be inevitably more and more interracial families until we are all essentially interracial.

Nah....since the vast majority of Americans are caucasian, marrying a caucasian would just spread the conservative gene!

So let's get this party started!

I heard a number around 200 years when the world will be mostly homogenous racially. Between increased travel, the internet removing cultural barriers, etc, it won't be long

We will not all look alike, though. And unfortunately, all the women will not look like Halle Berry.

They say that about blacks also... from a distance maybe, but up close there are distinguishable features.
