Are you implying that the democrats are willing to compromise or are you just leaving it out? The way it can be said (not the way I see it) is that if Obama has a mandate to raise taxes as voted by the public then Congress has the same mandate not to raise taxes (as voted by the public).
that's the way I see it playing out ... of course I think there should be major compromise by both parties but unless we're on the brink of disaster I am not sure we will see it ... Congress = failure IMO.

I have been saying for years in this forum ... our budget problems are directly related to the rise in pregnancies of unwed mothers. You can have an insta-family in this country. all you need to do is knock up a young uneducated girl ... she has the baby and along with that she gets the section 8 housing - the WIC - the EBT - the welfare - the utility assistance - free health care the free cell phone.
she then goes out and gets herself a sugar daddy who provides the family with all the extras. combined income easily approaches $1000 or so per week. As long as she doesn't marry him ... she can continue this for years as long as she keeps popping out babies.
flame away ... anyone who has had or has rental property will tell you this is how it is. The poor old people on whose back this country was built gets threatened with losing their Medicare and medicaid ... that is seriously messed up. Old people who in their day would never think of doing any of the above. who worked full time in factories after graduating high school - some never making it that far.

It's a rotten shame how low we have sunk.
I don't agree that's the main reason. But I do agree it's still a thing to fix.
Progressives say give them contraceptives and abortion to prevent them from getting knocked up and get them worthwhile members of society.
Conservatives want to deny them these and then cut these benefits so we have poor children and single mothers, correlated with problematic children and increased criminality from the kids, which of course mandates more police spending and bigger jails to deal with an issue that could have been solved cheaply and far more humanely decades ago.
When confronted with this reality, moral nazis and 'small government' types tell us we should tell these people to behave and close their legs, and that they will listen.

The Patriots have been overachievers the past two years. It doesn't have the talent to compensate for injuries, and it wins so much because it puts in 99% effort in the regular season and plays with terrific schemes to mask its deficiencies.
But in the playoffs a good team at 99% will not beat emotional, talented teams that play at 100%. It's what happened against the Giants in 2011 and the Ravens in 2012.

I agree with you. I just wonder how serious anybody in Wash is about cutting spending if they continue to raise the debt ceiling and compromise on raising taxes. I mean you want to show me you can cut some spending a little and be fiscally responsible, fine raise some taxes. Just show me first! If you want to revamp the tax code and make everybody pay "their" fair share, I can get behind that too. I will pay more in taxes, it's just not right to ask those who pay the bulk of the taxes to pay more. We have to revamp the system.

the conservative response is a bad one ... it is way cheaper as a society to provide people with contraception ... free. Religious objection IMO has no place in the response and the religious objection in this case has caused a great financial burden upon society. Much cheaper to supply condoms and pills and devices than to be paying for housing, food and health care for unwanted and unexpected children.

You know, Doc, you're starting to change my mind on this issue. I'm starting to think we should do everything we can to make sure that minority communities have access to all the contraception and all the abortions money can buy. I think that will be an important service to the minority communities.

I don't know if you are being sarcastic, but there are some very compelling studies that do link contraceptive use and abortion legalization to decreased crime.
People simply don't respond to abstinence efforts. As a nation we have to confront the reality that young people are impulsive and stupid and that it is smart to spend a little now to save a lot later.

Largely, I agree you. We just have to attack something. We have hid behind politics and party lines too much. Somebodies gotta step up and trim some fat.
For me it starts with spending, that's a tough pill to swallow and it doesn't appeal to anyone's base. My faith is dwindling.....
