That's ridiculous. Worse, were the $2,500 they were paying contractors after Katrina, to staples blue tarps over people's roofs, if they they claimed to have a leak. I hate to sound like a broken record, but just like it is with a lot of things government, it's not so much "its" existence, it's the extent or degree.
Are you speaking of Bush's FEMA or the FEMA of today??

There has been major changes to the agency, it has essentially been reorganized and restructured.....

I don't know if your right or not, I think it just needed competent people to run it. The only time it seemed to fail was with good old brownie the arabian horse judge at the helm.

Same diff, same bureaucrats.

The biggest diff between Katrina and Sandra was the response of local officials. Even in the Katrina hurricane, MS & Ala fared far bett than LA because their governors and they didn't have R Nagin running a city.

Gov. Cuomo says the Department of Defense will set up emergency mobile fuel stations at five locations around the New York City metro area.

Free gasoline will be distributed, with a 10-gallon per-person limit, Cuomo announced at a briefing today. Cars and emergency service vehicles will be able to fill up directly from the 5,000-gallon trucks.

Their governors were Republicans.. Nagin was a Democrat.

Only shows you have no idea what you are talking about, that disaster is not just a talking point.. NOLA had 80% of the damage, while Miss and Al had 20% of the damage...

Barbour was a long time Republican Operative and governor of Mississippi and played the game well, for which he was rewarded...

Nagin should take some blame, but for Louisiana there is plenty of blame to go around.. the governor, FEMA, Army Corps of Engineers and many other contributed to that mess...

Not sure you can fathom the magnitude of destruction from that storm.. "Nice Job Brownie", was an epithet that symbolized the nonchalant attitude of George W.

FEMA performs a service that is actually part of the government's job, to protect it's citizens. This isn't the postal "service" that we're talking about here, or the host of other government agencies that waste our tax dollars.

Unfortunately, many of the same people who criticized our President and FEMA for Katrina and the aftermath then are, laughingly, taking shots at men running against the current sitting President for the same exact situation that exists now. Funny how that works.

My son's company will be assisting FEMA in the NY/NJ area as soon as the initial response teams have cleaned up a little. Hopefully, FEMA will be around long enough for him to go there and come back. He's excited about the chance.

This morning according to the AP...

On Friday, responding to severe fuel shortages in storm-affected areas, the White House ordered the Department of Defense to "deliver 12 million gallons each of gasoline and diesel fuel, mostly from commercial suppliers, to staging areas in New Jersey," according to The New York Times. It also authorized the tapping of the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve for the first time.

They are also flying 17 military planes full of bucket trucks and other heavy equipment from California to NJ..
Christie is no dummy for praising Obama's response to the crisis on the eve of the election. He knows Mitt is a goner.

Hey 1960 - even though it's totally fallen off since e-mail, people still want an envelope going up to 3000 miles somehow for less that 50 cents.

You set up the private company that does that, and the postal service can go away tomorrow.

Agree w/you that FEMA's a necessity.

As to the question of FEMA writing big checks for people who are already rich (not you, the ideological crew):

1) Links would be good, and more importantly,

2) So you're saying that disasters should be opportunities for redistributionism and picking winners and losers?

I can sort of see where you're coming from with (2), above... although my understanding is that the vast majority of material disaster relief does, in fact, go to those who can't foot the bill on their own. So you already have what you say (just for this thread) you want.

I think it should be decentralized, and cease to exist in its current form. States need money when disasters strike, not bureaucracy.
