Is everyone here prepared? What have you done to prepare?
I read this a few minutes ago....
Quote:
"Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the forecasting service Weather Underground, said this could be as big, perhaps bigger, than the worst East Coast storm on record, a 1938 New England hurricane that is sometimes known as the Long Island Express, which killed nearly 800 people."
Do not under-estimate this storm and think, "It won't be that bad" just because some forecasts never turn out to be what they say.
This thing is no joke.

Thanks Darryl...but I realize this and I started this thread purposefully separate from the other one.
That one has to do with the election. I want this one to purely about the approaching storm and how it affects each one of us.
I should have kept the politics out of this one and not responded. Sorry about that PR.
There's no way to know exactly what direction this storm will head, but if it hits here I have some protection from the northeast. Also, my son came over yesterday to help me get some things off of the deck and I'll pull some of the lighter stuff in today. It's better to prepare for the storm and not have it hit than to take it lightly and get rocked.

I'm fairly well prepared by default; years of living in a hurricane zone creates a few habits. I battened down the hatches, chopped down a couple potentially troublesome limbs, gassed and tuned up the winter Impreza (I live in a pretty high elevation and there is a potential for snow here), and made sure the generator was in working order and the panel connections were good.
We have no leaves on the trees here, so while I don't expect the problems we had last year with heavy leaves causing power outages, it also means the wind will whip through a little easier.
I'm betting the impact here in upstate CT won't be that bad, unless you live in the valley. In that case, the flooding could be particularly bad.

------------------ “On a day when they could have had impact players David Terrell or Koren Robinson..they took Georgia defensive tackle Richard Seymour, who had 1 sacks last season in the pass-happy SEC and is too tall to play tackle at 6-6 and too slow to play defensive end. This genius move was followed by trading out of a spot where they could have gotten the last decent receiver in Robert Ferguson and settled for tackle Matt Light, who will not help any time soon.”

Upstate CT? I have a brother who lives high on a large hill in East Windsor CT. Is that close to you? He was without power for a week last year. Said he'd buy a generator after that storm but procrastinated until this weekend. I'll have to call him today to see if he was able to get one!
Hope you make out ok...CT is supposedly in one of the highest danger zones....again!

I'm about twenty miles west of there. Yeah, East Windsor and the rest of the CT river valley area got hit particularly hard last during Irene and the snowstorm. My father decided to try and get a new generator this week, but there's a three week backup.
Hope you make it alright, but it looks like you guys up in MA might miss the worst of it.

All of southern New England is in a very dangerous zone starting tonight through Tuesday.....long duration storm for sure.
I'm a part-time amature weather buff....have been since I was a child. So I enjoy the excitement of any major storm. My all-time favorite was the Blizzard of '78. Prolly before your time buddy.

Sure was. I grew up on the VA/NC line and we habitually got hurricanes. My earliest memory of a major meteorological event was Hurricane Gloria. Then again, I also seem to recall a huge snowstorm in 1983(?); something very unusual for Virginia Beach.
