It's possible he didn't know. I don't recall learning that. But, I think he was not intending to give a history lesson. The advance of the Union Forces did lead to a new a day that resulted in the end of slavery. But, taken literally, he was wrong by any standard, since it wasn't the advance of the Union forces that brought a new day. That advance didn't really start until well into the war, and the Emancipation Proclamation only affected slaves as Union forces conquered the South. Further, slavery wasn't made illegal until the the 13th amendment was passed at the end of the war, which I would presume Obama knows as most educated people know. So, my guess, he was simplifying our history for the sake of making a moral point. What he knew and didn't know about the details is anyone's guess.
